The Experience

Follow the long winding track to a scattering of farmhouses and barns that have been in the family for 700 years. Old, remote and lovingly restored, the domaine reveals the essence of ‘la France profonde’.

There’s a spacious suite for two upstairs and a big beamy sitting room bright with books, paintings, and exotic things from Diane’s travels. Help yourself to a tasty organic breakfast of croissants, bread and jams – on sunny days enjoy it in the plant-filled courtyard. In winter, cosy up to the crackling fire.

Diane, raised in rolling Burgundy, welcomes you to this gastronomic region. Book dinner at the little auberge in St Igny de Vers (4km), or beat a path to Iguerande. Michel Troisgros’ restaurant La Colline du Colombier, is worth the 40-minute drive. For more days out, drive 15 minutes to Château de Drée or follow the Circuit des Eglises romanes for a tour of the Brionnais’ medieval chapels.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walking paths and trails abound on the edge of the Brionnais, a land of Romanesque churches, vineyards, rivers, pastures and forests. Come home to rest under the trees, or have a dip in the long shallow salt pool. A ten-minute drive away is Montagne du Dun, with a beautiful chapel and a superb panorama of La Clayette (the nearest place for restaurants). Diane offers three-night residential drawing courses twice a year.

Local points of interest from Diane De Valou

  • The Brionnais region is full of wonderful heritage and pretty villages - there are many Romanesque chapels to visit, built by the Cluny monks.
  • We're 1h 25 minutes to Lyon, the gastronomy capital of France.
  • There are some wonderful summer music festivals nearby such as classical and jazz, with concerts taking place in some of the chapels.

Introducing

Diane De Valou

Diane, a painter, lives in the 18th-century farmhouse across the courtyard from the guests' house, with a gentle dog, a blue-eyed cat and a little horse who roams the garden. Dividing her time between India and France, she is well-travelled, having lived in Paris, New York and Venice along the way. She likes to welcome guests as personal friends, and gladly shares the places she loves the best.
