Built for a dignitary who lost his head in the French Revolution, this handsome house sits on an impeccable estate of landscaped gardens, neat, gravelled, lavender-lined paths, plus orangerie, pond and hornbeam maze. Johan and Pieter, your smiley, engaging, humorous hosts, came from Holland several years ago and have made everything elegant, modern and stylish. A fine stone staircase with a wrought-iron banister leads to spacious, minimally furnished rooms painted in muted hues of moss and deep-blue; views ponder over the gardens to hilly horizons, and fabulous modern art hangs on the walls. A further huge suite with a fine dressing area lies under dramatic roof carpentry in a cottage outside. Bathrooms are spotless white with state-of-the-art showers, pale pebble floors, beautiful accessories and chunky towels. Tuck into breakfast in the vast dining room with its dark walls and limestone flags, then work it off in the first-floor fitness room. Or set off for the vineyards and the wine tastings, the pretty villages with their ancient half-timbered houses, the walks and the cycle rides. Fabulous in every way.
