Impossible not to be charmed by the medieval fortified village of Montréal. The Battyes were and have made it their home. They’ve also created two lovely places to stay at the heart of it: Grand Crème – through the arched gateway, past a higgle of ancient houses – renovated stables where old stone and beams now frame friendly rustic modernity. Warm and bold colours, family pieces and art, a piano, a newly done kitchen and comfy sitting room, with swish round fireplace. Upstairs: the grand master double has vaulted ceilings and a roll top bath; a simple bunk-bedded room and a twin under the eaves. And similarly rustic and attractive Petit Crème – just off the main street leading to the church – flag-floored, low oak-beamed, with open plan small kitchen/sitting/dining area. A big, easy-going family room upstairs with wood-burner and again a wow of a master bedroom, with antique bed and balcony, garden and country views; another, simple double and an atticy twin. Their nearby B&B pool and sauna are yours to share – a group of 22 could take over the whole place! Visit vineyards, châteaux, the Morvan National Park.
