The
Experience

You’re in the middle of a proper Burgundian village by the church. Rooms are filled with character and beautiful things – a dining room with a wonderful beamed ceiling, a sitting room with Persian rugs, vast fireplace, pink tiled floor. Charming Alan and Rosemary give you breakfasts with homemade jams at one big table, outdoors in fine weather. Bedrooms – one in one house, two in the other – are fresh as a daisy and warm as toast with fine antiques and good art – one packed with books from floor to ceiling. Explore culture, taste wine, nip to Epoisses for some remarkably smelly cheese. A super place to stay.

Reviews

Staying here was a great start to our holiday - not least because Alan and Rosemary are such good hosts. Highly recommend.

Ruth, Market harborough

We stopped off for a night en route to Marseille and i'm so glad we chose Le Verger. The place is rustic and dreamy with a huge garden and pool. The location is a small village in the middle of nowhere. I haven't felt quiet like that for a long time. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming and I liked them straight away. The rooms are on the other side of the house (it's big) so you feel that it is all yours. I will use it again if i come that way.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Alan Ravenscroft & Rosemary Stones

  • Coutarnoux: Our picturesque village (population 160) offers rural charm and historical interest. Our garden wall is part of the ancient village wall that dates from the time when Coutarnoux was a fortified village.
  • Le Verger is opposite the village church while the orchard garden side of the property has uninterrupted views across fields and woodlands. The nearby Fôret d’Hervault is a wonderful place for forest nature walks.
  • The Burgundy region is the true heartland of France. The greatest wines are grown here and some of the greatest chefs are in Burgundy. Chablis and Irancy are just two of the local vineyards.
  • Cafes: Mix with the locals at nearby authentic French cafes. Either down the hill in L' Isle sur Serein at “Les Epis D’or” or at “Au Quinze” in the village of Montreal, which also serves a good set menu lunch.
  • Places of interest: The market town of Avallon with its fabulous Saturday market; the prehistoric cave complex at Grottes d'Arcy-sur-Cure and Vezelay with its exquisite hilltop abbey church, many galleries, shops and restaurants.
  • Chateaux and more: Visit Epoisses (home of the famous cheese) and Bazoches (home of military architect Vauban) or the picturesque village of Montréal with its famous wooden carvings and the battlefield of Alésia where Caesar defeated Vercingetorix.
