The Experience

The large attractive farmhouse is surrounded by nature. In spring and autumn you can see migrating cranes as they gather in their thousands on the farm’s fields, and beyond on Lac du Der. Come to simply slow down and relax; it’s a wonderful place to write, read, draw or take photos.

Arrive for afternoon tea, which Christine serves in the elegant panelled salon. The B&B has its own entrance, so you’re free to come and go, and handsome bedrooms lie across the top two floors. Breakfast is a treat: home-produced honey and homemade cakes, yogurt, cheese, bread and jams.

Fish in the grounds, wander in the garden and orchard or head off for the southern section of the Route de Champagne and the wonderful artisan producers around Bar sur Aube (35km). Come home to supper in the dining room or out in the garden: homegrown veg, local charcuterie, cheese, wine, a tomato pie perhaps – a delicious and generous help-yourself affair. Homemade and regional products are available to buy as well.

We had a one night stay on our way back from the Alps. Due to traffic, we arrived at 9pm, not 7.30pm as planned, so we had missed dinner. We phoned ahead and spoke to Christine, our lovely host, who set us aside an amazing feast for when we arrived! We were very grateful for this kindness and it was such a pleasure to be greeted by Christine's smiling face on our arrival! Our room was huge and elegantly furnished, as was the bathroom -Very clean and the bed very comfy. Breakfast was delicious with homemade honey and jams. The house and grounds are stunning and we would definitely stay again!

This is an amazing place to stay. The setting is stunning with lovely garden to explore and fantastic lake. Christine is a wonderful host and her sense of fun is infectious. We had evening meal here and it was delicious. The house is immaculately presented and it was lovely to have a bath rather than just a shower. It is located in a very pretty area. Wilson the dog is also another delightful reason to stay in this lovely place! We would stay here again without hesitation.

A lovely warm welcome by our host. A charming home with glorious grounds. Beautiful crisp fresh linens.

We have been using Domaine de Boulancourt for many years and always make a point of breaking our journey there either northbound or southbound; Christine Viel-Cazal is so friendly and welcoming!

We stayed 3 nights in this beautiful and tranquil house and fully agree with your write-up.It is a little out of the way for just an overnight stop but perfect for a longer stay to 'chill out' in peace. Christine is an excellent cook and hostess and a charming person. On our final evening we talked with her about France and the French for over two hours, the conversation flowing easily between French and English and it was a memorable occasion. We have stayed in a number of places chosen from your book over many years and this was one we shall remember with much pleasure. Strongly recommended

Superb old traditional French country house. Madame Christine is a delightful person. We had a very tasty 4 course dinner, preceded by an aperitif. I would recommend this establishment to anyone.

Quite the best B&B we have experienced. A gem of a place to stay - fine property with magnificent grounds and the most genuine welcome from the charming owner with her adorable dog Wilson. Like being part of a very enjoyable house party with a delicious four course dinner with unlimited wine and lovely breakfast complete with home made jams and honey. No touring holiday for us in France is complete without ensuring a stay here on the way down and back. A firm favourite.

I loved this B&B. On a wet day we were greeted by a blazing fire, the beds were very comfortable, the rooms spotless and stylish and the food excellent with local products. I can't wait to go back.

I have stayed at this wonderful manor house several times and love it more and more each time. Christine the hostess is just the best. So friendly, accommodating and attentive. You couldn't wish for anything more. Looking forward to the next time.

Very impressive property with an extremely friendly and relaxed hostess. Christine cooked us a great meal using a mixture of home grown and local produce. If you stay there you must ask Christine why her dog is called 'Wilson'. It's a great story, beautifully told.

We stayed at Domaine de Boulancourt on our way back to Britain after a couple of weeks touring France, and it was a delightful experience. The house is grand but welcoming; the bedrooms very comfortable; and the dinner (four courses including cheese and wine) excellent. Everything is managed with great charm and discreet efficiency by Christine. Quite a few guests treat it as a convenient place to break the journey to or from the Britain but it’s a shame not to stay a bit longer. Apart from the delights of the house and grounds, the area is well worth exploring for a few days.

Bubbly Christine and knowledgeable Phillipe make one feel very welcome. Christine's dinner and breakfast were fabulous from aperitife to red and white wines from Saumur. Will visit again

Loved the place. This is a beautiful small chateau with beautifully decorated rooms. We liked everything about it from the welcome, to our names written on the bedroom door, to the constantly available tea in the drawing room. Christine’s cooking is wonderful. The Tarte de Tomates is to die for. Our bedroom was elegant with a bath big enough to swim in.

The neighbourhood

Three km from sleepy, lovely Longeville-sur-la-Laines you are surrounded by flat fields and tranquillity. As for the park, you could relax here for hours. On the banks of the vast Lac du Der-Chantecoq (20km), a destination for birdwatchers, is a fascinating 'museum village': three villages that were transported to dry land before the man-made lake was created. Another must-visit is the Route de Champagne Aube, between Bar-sur-Aube and Colombey-les-deux-Eglises.

Local points of interest from Philippe & Christine Viel-Cazal

  • Many famous names have made their home in Champagne: General Charles de Gaulle at Colombey-les-Deux-Églises (30km); Voltaire at Chåteaux Cirey, Cirey-sur-Blaise (25km); and Napoléon I at Brienne le Chåteau military school (15km).
  • Discover the natural treasure trove of the 'Forêt d'Orient' Regional National Park and the banks of Lake Der.
  • Dinner is made from organic vegetables and fruits from the garden, and selected regional wines and cheeses.
  • The living room, the garden, the dining room are real spaces of freedom and rest.

Philippe & Christine Viel-Cazal

The house has long been in Philippe’s family and he and Christine took on the farm in 1981. Warm generous hosts, they make you feel part of the family. Christine’s happy to speak English or French.
