Explore Champagne from this classy, quirky big house in a quiet little village. New Zealand owners offer decadent dinners under the trees

Read guest comments

New Zealanders Michael and Glenis do excellent table d'hôtes and love sharing their restored 19th-century house full of surprises: some walls are unadorned but for the mason's scribbles. The upstairs suite is separated by a fabulous wall of bookcases and an attic stair, the ground floor has a French country feel. Another big, cleverly designed room leads off the courtyard where you sit in the shade of birch trees and dine (and enjoy a champagne aperitif). Oyes church has no chiming clocks: you'll sleep deeply here. Plenty of fun and funky brocante yet the comforts are modern. Charming Sézanne is a 20-minute drive.

"Lovely house with very pretty courtyard and garden. Incredibly comfortable bed, great linen. Glenis and Mike are generous and very relaxed hosts. Delicious breakfast and dinner. Aupres d'Eglise is glorious escapism and completely unpretentious. They pay great attention to detail without fuss. They have terrific imagination and their creative skills are not just inside but extend to heavenly eating areas outside. Lots of help finding champagne too."

"What a great place to stay! There were three of us and we had newly converted stable rooms leading onto the courtyard. They were spacious and beautifully appointed. Glenis and Mike were wonderful hosts, and we spent a most enjoyable evening dining with them. The next day they pointed us in the right direction to buy some great champagne. We couldn't have asked for a better overnight stay. Hopefully we shall be back next year - but this time for a little longer. "

"An excellent place to stay. The Kiwi owners (Glenis & Mike) made our stay so hospitable. Good food and excellent wines. Our bedroom and wet-room was one of the recently converted stables. Very stylish and quirky interiors. (Mike is also a Set Designer for the film industry). Took lots of photos to pinch his ideas including the Himalayan Birch Trees in the courtyard. We will come back and stay again "

"If it were possible, I reckon that this marvellous place was even better than on my previous visit a year ago. My newly furnished room was full of delightful and successful objets trouves, the welcome was as warm as ever, the delicious meal served around the kitchen table copious and impeccable, and the conversation stimulating and wide-ranging. If there's a better chambres d'hotes in France than this I'd be most surprised"

"I recommend this delightful place without hesitation. The welcome from Glenis could hardly have been warmer, and she served us a delicious four-course meal with wine under the trees on a perfect September evening. She also coped with my having to make an early start the next morning, and served a marrvellous breakfast with home-made jams. The room was extremely comfortable, and furnished with real imagination and flair. I intend to go back there several times, as soon as possible."

"Absolutely perfect we stayed in the Garden Room on one nigth and the Attic Suite for two other nights. Wonderful evening meals - great hosts and a loveley quiet area but not far from good cities. Perfect"

"we had a wonderful time staying with Glenis and Mike, it was a great start to our holiday and returning at the end was like going home. The meals were delicious (they are both excellent cooks) the conversation both around the fire pit or the kitchen table late into the evening is such good fun and very entertaining. We will definitely be going back and taking friends, Highly recommended. Angela Phillips"

"Excellent, Michael and Glenis were excellent hosts, the accomodation was interesting and quirky but lovely. Food outstanding and great value and great touches with homemade breads, jams etc. Would love to go back - please don't move away in the near future Michael and Glenis!!"

"A magical place. Glenis & Michael top the bill - wonderful people, quintessential French farmhouse & sumptuous hospitality. We wanted our daughter to have a special 30th birthday but didn't expect it to be this special. I cannot recommend Aupres de l'Eglise enough - just go there & experience it yourself. Thanks you so much Glenis & Michael - we'll be back!"

"A special place, owned by special people. Mike and Glenis have created a beautiful and restful environment for long, joyous family holidays or luxurious short stays. However long you stay, you're likely to wistfully regret that you are not staying longer. Cakes on demand, great recommendations for day trips or secluded picnic spots and last minute bookings at the champagne house are all part of the kind and unintrusive customer care at aupres de l’eglise. Your hosts are cultured too and this makes for great conversation about art, film and literature late into the evening, warmed by well chosen wine and the fire that has cooked your supper. Staying here, my father’s 70th birthday was the very best it could be, for the entire family."

"We stayed for one night but wihed it had been longer. An idyllic setting improved by the excellent taste of Glenis and Mike. We stayed in the garden room which was huge and homely at the same time. Glenis's home cooked dinner was delicious washed down with some lovely champagne and wine. We could have stayed for a week."

"We are a family of four and this place was just perfect! Lovely hosts, beautiful setting, fantastic food and wine, and wonderful room. We were sad we were only there for one night. We will definitely be returning next year for a longer stay."

"Beautiful, quirky house and decor. Wonderful warm welcome - the right mix between seeing to all your needs and leaving you to your own devices. Fantastic food served for dinner, kids and adults alike. Wished we could have stayed for longer. Will be back."

"We stayed in the family room in July, and had a really enjoyable relaxing time. The room is lovely, spacious and very comfortable, with very thoughtful touches such as the seats and recliners in the terrace. Glennis and Mike are excellent hosts, and Glennis is a fantastic cook who prepared a feast of a vegetarian picnic for us. I cannot recommend staying here highly enough and hope to return soon."
