The Experience

A delightful facelift for this 1850 château which had fallen into disrepair – another triumph for the clever Millésime Group. Everything is geared to delight you, from the fabulous drawing room with its huge windows and views over the vines, many dining areas and the large wooden deck for al fresco meals overlooking the famous Montagne de Reims. The chef includes regional specialities in a seasonally changing menu, three courses or à la carte.

Breakfast on fresh breads, pastries, jams and cheeses, charcuterie, smoked fish from a local producer and eggs any way you like. The wellness centre has a spa with a gym, sauna and hammam, there are treatments, massage cabins and Nordic wooden hot tubs. Choose from 90 different bottles on the champagne menu, some of which are from smaller local producers.

There are endless walks through the vines, small copses of woodland or the game-filled forest surrounding the mountain.

I am a huge fan of the Millésime hotel collection. The buildings are always beautiful, the decoration exquisite, the food original and delicious and the staff as warm and friendly as can be. The Château de Sacy is especially appealing for a long weekend, tasting champagne in family-run vineyards then watching the stars after a glorious day in one of their hot tubs.

The neighbourhood

Walk to lots of vineyards for tastings. You're 20-minutes by car from Champagne or Reims with many little villages and towns dotted through - you'll also come across some small restaurants, including Michelin starred ones. For culture, shopping and museums, head for Reims and its stunning cathedral and the Palais du Tau for an important collection of artwork dedicated to French kings.
