The Experience

Welcome to the master house in Vallecalle, on the village edge, an eagle’s nest with valley views. Prop up your sketch pad and feel inspired – the terraced gardens have oranges, olives, a hammock, corners for shade and sun. Tumble down the valley to the river below for an exhilarating wild swim.

Paul-Henri and Myriam are your welcoming hosts, living the dream and happy to advise you on their land – the food, the culture – or leave you in peace to explore. Strike out on glorious walks from the door, there’s a Renaissance church, San Michele, within a ten-minute stroll; each coast has perfect beaches and the pretty town of Bastia is a half hour drive.

There are simple, gracious bedrooms, all with space to sit and relax. Paul-Henri’s cooking and Myriam’s baking is always delicious and there are restaurants within a 15-minute drive if you fancy eating out.

I spent a lovely night here at the end of my voyage to discover Corsica for Sawday's. It is a fine old house and the views are unforgettable, from all sides are mountains, valleys and the sea sparkling in the distance. There's a feeling of timelessness which is mesmerising, also thanks to the fact that the rooms are very simply decorated.

Nicky, Sawday's Inspector

Vallecalle is a lovely and peaceful place. Wenn enjoyed our stay so much !

Thomas, Salzburg

Simply delightful - we just loved the peace and beauty combined with special hospitality. Adding to that Paul Henri provides real Corsican passion for the area

andrew, Wetheral

The view from the house, and particularly from the spacious Nebbiu bedroom (4 windows in 3 directions) is simply exhilarating. It alone makes a stay at M. Gaucher's b&b most worthwhile. But there is much more. A gracious welcome, very good breakfast and dinner (we spent an enchanting evening with the hosts and some other guests), a convenient location for all kinds of excursions in every direction (although we didn't really need much more than to sit and and watch the weather change). We will definitely be back.

Sibylle, Munich

This is a simply wonderful place to stay in northern Corsica. The location could not be more beautiful. We stayed in the enormous and stylish 'Nebbiu' room - we had stunning views to the sea from one window, of the mountains from another, and of the lush terraced garden from a third. Paul Henri was so warm and hospitable, as well as being a great source of local knowledge and advice on places to visit. A highlight for us was breakfast on the terrace, under a tree, beautifully but simply presented with lovely bread, jam and coffee. We would highly recommend it, and we will return!

This is a truly glorious place to stay: The old house has great charm and is situated beautifully overlooking the mountains and large gardens. The owners are very friendly and helpful, too, if there is anything you need to know or want to ask about the island. It is very clear that they put great effort into the keeping of their house and its gardens. We have enjoyed ourselves very much here and hope to be able to come back soon.

The neighbourhood

Vallecalle is pretty and there are wonderful walks from the door in the hills and valleys of the Nebbio, the area which produces honey, chestnuts and some of the island's finest wine, or along the coastal path from La Roya beach to Ostriconi river. Strike out to Désert des Agriates, whose rugged coastline harbours one of Corsica's least accessible, but most beautiful beaches.

Local points of interest from Myriam & Paul-Henri Gaucher

  • Visit one of the most beautiful churches in Corsica, the roman chapel of San Michele in Murato.
  • Visit the amazing sandy beaches of the the 'Desert of the Agriates'.
  • In July enjoy the Patrimonio guitar festival and Porto Latino in August in saint Florent
  • go hiking in the hills and valleys of the Nebbio or along the coastal path from La Roya beach to Ostriconi river
  • Have a tour of the vineyard at Patrimonio. Close to Saint Florent you'll find Cap Corse, a remarkable and unique area of Corsica.

Paul-Henri and Myriam are knowledgeable and passionate about their island and home. They also leave out maps and guidebooks in the dining room. Stay in for supper with them - they are warm and witty.
