The Experience

Relax on your leafy patio, as the children frolic in the pool. Meet the other guests over wine tastings, or fun weekly dinners in the sun. This retreat is hard to beat, thanks to its owners Philippe and Véronique.

This delightful pair have thought of everything, from fabulous kitchens to a games room for wet days to a genuine welcome for all. With its striking 19th-century winery, white gravelled courtyards and verdant gardens, the domaine oozes southern charm.

Pop into the village for breakfast’s croissants: it’s a two-minute stroll. Cycle the tow path of the Canal du Midi; take a picnic to the beach at Narbonne (35km); discover medieval Carcassonne. Return to elegant living areas dotted with antiques, and big lofty bedrooms on the top floor. Of all the gites, Sauge and Safran are the stars.

Location

The neighbourhood

Just outside the gates is the tiny village of Saint Nazare d'Aude, with one small shop, a tabac and a bakery. A number of very good restaurants are a walk or cycle ride away along the leafy Canal du Midi, to the little port of Le Somail (2km). Facilities on site include a boules court, a games room, a playground, a playroom, a chill-out space for teens, and a heated fenced pool.

Local points of interest from Véronique & Philippe Comte

  • If you wish, we’re more than happy to give personalised advice on activities. We can suggest walking routes and cycle tracks to discovers, as well as making restaurant and activity reservations for you.
  • You can also relax in the garden, full of Mediterranean plants, or go bird watching near the salt marshes not far from us. You could also try delicious seafood, such as oysters and fish from the Med.
  • We hold wine tastings once a week in high season, with a regional wine producer. We can also suggest which cellars and wine makers to visit near the Domaine.
  • We’re 30 minutes from the beautiful beaches and rivers. You can visit chateaux, abbeys, charming villages and do sports: kite surfing, canoeing, rock climbing, tennis 4km away, cycling on the Canal du Midi 2km away.
  • We hold welcome drinks, for just your group, or with other guests – a lovely way for you and your children to get to know everyone else staying at the domaine. There’ll be lots to keep them busy too – ping-pong, climbing frame, football goal…
  • You can also discover local markets, treat yourselves in charming (and excellent) restaurants on the beach and in the countryside. You can meet olive oil, honey, herb and truffle producers nearby too.

Introducing

Véronique & Philippe Comte

Philippe and Véronique are a lovely couple who have a passion for the property and great knowledge of the area. In 2012 they left Paris for the Languedoc, fell in love with the domaine, renovated extensively, and opened in 2015. They live in the village but meet every guest personally, and are frequently on site.
