The Experience

Bart brings homemade breakfasts to the terrace by the river: creamy cappuccino, ‘pommes caramelisées’. The river Dure flows through the gardens, secluded and magical with mature trees, scattered terraces and a wooden play area. Gather by the summer kitchen or swim long laps in the pool.

This listed textiles mill, built in 1739 on the edge of Montolieu, has been exquisitely revived and divided up into apartments. Spread over three floors, with a high-ceilinged dining hall and a vaulted cellar bar, each is spacious, airy and light. The Dutch owners have imbued it with a brave new spirit, and each one feels like home.

The river teems with wildlife and the area with wineries. Take off with a packed lunch of delicious local produce from Marieke; return to a massage in the spa; browse the little on site shop. Wander the steep streets of the medieval village… best known for its 16 bookshops.

Reviews

La Manufacture Royale is a buidling that exudes history and culture. Staying there would be like a journey back in time to the grandeur of France in the 16th century. The riverside location and gardens are an absolute gem and must be one of the best locations in the region. The property offers spacious apartments that are ideal for couples, groups and families. A part of history with a modern touch.

Location

The neighbourhood

The property lies 300 yards from the heart of hilltop Montolieu; stroll to its picturesque restaurants, shops and tennis court. A pretty riverside walk runs from the house past a convent and the whole place is steeped in history. Medieval Carcassonne is a 20-minute drive, as is the food-based Les Halles de Jojo.
