The Experience

Park in the sleepy village, pass under the arch, enter the cobbled alley… and step back a thousand years. This characterful, three-storey retreat is built right into the castle ramparts, and the views from the balcony, and two of the bedrooms, reach to the hills of the forested Corbières and the river Orbieu.

The moment you enter you unwind. Find atmospheric, peaceful bedrooms and a whitewashed sitting/living room with plenty of space and comfort. You reach your terrace by walking round to the back of the property; listen to the birds, cook on the barbecue set into the rock.

For artisan shops and old houses of great beauty, Lagrasse is a 10-minute drive. There’s a restaurant in the village, but for more good options, try Ferrals-les-Corbières. The rivers are where everyone swims so rent the electric bikes and head for the Gorges de Thermes. Or bask at home on stylish loungers: the shared heated pool and jacuzzi are a 30-second stroll down the hill.

Reviews

I think that this place is special because its situation gives guests the opportunity to explore an area of outstanding natural beauty rich in history whilst staying in a comfortable gite which is part of a 11th century castle ramparts. You can take your breakfast on the outside terrace, swim and lounge by the pool all the while benefiting from the surrounding splendour of the countryside.

Location

The neighbourhood

In the foothills of the Pyrénées, the remote village of Saint-Pierre-des-Champs, reached by winding roads, awaits at the top of a hill. Restaurant Chez Pot's is a stroll away, and beautiful Lagrasse is 5km away, with shops, cafes, a farmers' market, a river to bathe in, and a much-visited abbey. Rivers, gorges and Cathar castles abound, and Carcassonne is a 50-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Hélène Carreaud

  • Enjoy the heated pool with the family. In a pretty flower garden, it is fenced for the safety of children. It is equipped with a swim against the current and a jacuzzi area. Young children can wade in the small bath
  • Do you like cycling? Why not try to do it without fatigue? Rent an electric bike (we bring it to your place of departure). I propose you 8 circuits that you will appreciate by their facility. To your pedals ..
  • Do your children like to watch wild animals? take them to the African reserve of Sigean, they will be able to mix wild animals in freedom. Be careful, at the beginning of the afternoon, they sleep, visit them rather in the morning ...
  • Visit the Cathar Castles, Quéribus, Peyrepertuse, Termes, the little ones will play the knights, the biggest will be able to admire the medieval architecture. And from the highest point, you will admire the Pyrenees and you will see the Mediterranean
  • July 14, Carcassonne is in style, its ramparts are illuminated by fireworks. Come in advance, choose a nice spot on a restaurant terrace, take the time to dine and enjoy this unique show as soon as it gets dark.
  • There are many wonderful places to swim with children in the gorges of Orbieu, Termes, Verdouble or Galamus. Basins dug into the rock by waterfalls are filled with transparent water for swimming and swimming.

Introducing

Hélène Carreaud

Hélène has been renovating her section of these castle ruins for 30 years. Following a successful career in the military, she opened a B&B, and, in 2019 transformed the space into gîtes - “houses of life, furnished and decorated with my favourites, my ideas and my tastes”. She has also introduced a jacuzzi and a heated pool - open April to October.
