The Experience

Enter the hall of this immaculate townhouse in Bize-Minervois, to be greeted by owners who love to spoil. Sandy serves up cocktails on silver trays, Richard creates bountiful breakfasts and dinners. Consummate hosts, they are full of surprises and fabulous fun touches, from chandeliers in the garden to gourmet picnics for cyclists.

Lounge in the garden, sitting room, or in your own suite: the bedrooms are spread over two floors. Find dreamy beds, lofty ceilings, fancy cornices, and charming period floors. One room has its own terrace overlooking the garden, another on the top floor has a spacious seating area which feels nicely private.

Not only is the area great for foodies and wine lovers, it’s stuffed with history too. Set off for medieval Carcassonne (45km), or Narbonne, old capital of Gaul, an easy drive. Cycle along the languid Canal du Midi, kayak down the Cesse, or swim in the village. The lovely leafy river is a two-minute stroll.

There are so many aspects to Maison des Palmiers that make it a special place to stay, such as the wonderfully generous owners, the fabulous interiors they've created and the sunny terrace to retreat to - and all with Bize-Minervois on your doorstep and this delightful corner of the south to explore.

The neighbourhood

Bize-Minervois is a peaceful, medieval, riverside town, and the house is on one of its main streets. All you need is on foot: post office, pharmacy, shops, bakeries, bar, and a handful of lovely restaurants. 'Chez Jean Marc' (French-Malasian) is the owners' favourite. There's wild swimming and frolicking in the river in summer, an olive festival in December, and walking and cycling all year round.

Local points of interest from Richard & Sandy Munns

  • A visit to the Languedoc is not complete without a wine tasting. There are several caves offering wine tasting and we can also arrange a wine tour with a local specialist.
  • We are 30 minutes from the nearest beaches of Narbonne and Gruissan. Our coastline is lined with a variety of other wonderful beaches, some with bars and sun loungers and some rustic, but miles of golden sand beckon.
  • We have several cities for those looking for bustle and culture. These include Narbonne, Beziers and Montpellier. Toulouse is also within reach.
  • For those looking for something more energetic the area offers walking, cycling, kayaking and more. The River Cesse in the village is dammed in the summer and is great for swimming.
  • We are surrounded by beautiful scenery and ancient villages. Minerve is listed as one of France’s most beautiful and is just a ten minute drive away. You can follow the Cathare Trail and discover many more.
  • The region is well known for its cuisine. We offer dinner and great cocktails at Maison des Palmiers but there are three great restaurants within walking distance and many more just a short drive away.

Richard & Sandy Munns

In 2019 Richard and Sandy left careers in London to pursue a dream: to open their own special place in France. Having loved holidays in the Languedoc for many years, they now create brilliant experiences for guests. Their warmth and charm is irresistible.
