The Experience

This three-storey house is set on a narrow lane running along the edge of the medieval city walls, and although it’s close to the bustle of the city you’ll feel peaceful and tucked away.

There’s plenty of space inside to spread out: a spacious sitting room, a TV area, a dining area and a playroom with table tennis. A covered balcony has views of the castle and the terraced garden faces its ramparts: when they’re lit up at night the view is magical, and if you’re here for Bastille Day you’ll have a front-row seat for the fireworks.

Stroll to shops, a boulangerie and a wide choice of restaurants, visit the local market and cook together in the kitchen or use the barbecue. For days out, the Canal Du Midi is a 10-minute drive, numerous wineries offering tastings are less than a 20-minute drive away, and the charming villages of Mirepoix, Minerve and Lagrasse are within an hour.

The neighbourhood

The house is located in the mainly residential district of La Barbacane, only five minutes on foot from the medieval citadel of Carcassonne and a three-minute walk away from the riverbank and park. Within five minutes stroll to seven restaurants ranging from haute cuisine to casual, as well as a bar, boulangerie and grocery store; walk a little further into the city itself for even more options.

Local points of interest from John Speck

  • Carcassonne castle 5 mins walk - largest castle in Europe
  • Carcassonne plage - big lake with fun toys for kids about 5 mins by car
  • Mirepoix - beautiful historic village
  • Caunes-Minervois - beautiful village with medieval abbey
  • Narbonne - lovely town 40 mins by car
  • Toulouse - lovely city an hour by car

John Speck

Co-owners John and Ashley bought the house as a total wreck in 2011 and sympathetically restored it to its present state. You'll let yourself in using the keysafe, or the neighbours two doors down will give you the keys - they're fluent in French and English and are on hand if you need anything.
