Tucked into a sweet courtyard garden, here is a charming bolthole for two. You’re in a village yet no-one would know you were here, your little house is so snugly private – that’s half the attraction. Step into an open-plan living area with stone and lime-plaster walls, comfy blue sofa, mosaic-topped table and a galley kitchen decked out in yellow and blue. It’s spotlessly clean and you have all you need: coffee maker, decent crockery, CD player, good reading lamps. Then it’s up the open staircase to the bedroom under the beams. Handsome, quality bedding is set off by a simple pine floor, white walls and prettily exposed stone. A ‘Juliet’ balcony overlooks the courtyard; the bathroom, with walk-in shower, dazzles in white and blue. The courtyard is just lovely, with its flowered tubs and climbing shrubs, attractive table and chairs and quirky collection of tools and rustic keys. Delightful Sandra lives opposite, on hand to help but respecting your privacy. She’ll tell you all about the markets and restaurants, the lake for swimming and the stunning walks.

We had a really lovely time at The Courtyard Gite combining holiday and house-hunting. The gite is comfortable and pretty, the wonderful walled courtyard filled with flowers. All you need for a couple including kitchen/sitting room and lovely upstairs bedroom with clean, modern shower room. We found Arques a perfect base. We particularly enjoyed swimming in the lake, visiting Cathar chateaux (several within easy reach), music in a local bar on Friday nights and the Sunday morning market in Esperaza. Sandra was a friendly host and a fount of local knowledge. Reader - we bought a house nearby!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sandra Dalgleish

  • Explore the wonderful Cathar chateaux perched high on mountain tops all within an easy days drive from the Courtyard Gite
  • Luxuriate in the warm thermal waters in the swimming pool at Rennes les Bains 10 minutes drive away. Or swim in the lake in Arques like most of us do or in the deep river pools where fresh icy water tumbles down over the rocks.
  • Indulge your music tastes at various music festivals held in the area during the summer plus every weekend at La Claranda in Serres, just 5 minutes drive away, you can listen to world music and jazz.
  • Visit the local market in Esperaza on a Sunday morning or Mirepoix on a Monday or Limoux on a Friday, All are bursting with colour, fabulous produce, live music and that great French market atmosphere
  • Coloured markers on the trees will lead you along numerous tracks through the forests around Arques and into the hills giving you stunning views of the Pyrenees and the chance to see butterflies galore and wild orchids at certain times of the year
  • Let the horse take the strain and go for a one or two hour ride from the centre of the village up into the hills .The horses are well behaved and Jacques, the owner, loves to practise his English with his clients.
