The Experience
A big old house beautifully converted into a hotel by Patricia and Marc. It’s a family-friendly space with some downstairs bedrooms in a modern annexe and plenty of sitting/dining rooms to be sociable in, or to escape to.The 1535 building has seen many incarnations since it was built, but lots of its ancient features remain: an enormous stone fireplace in the old kitchen where you breakfast in winter, stone flagged floors, high ceilings, thick walls, a maze of corridors and staircases. You’ll find terraces for resting on, a mulberry tree for shade, walled gardens and a very beautiful pool. Children will discover a treehouse and a safe garden for running free. There’s a restaurant which is also open to the public for French gastronomic food; the amiable head chef offers cooking classes for all – children included.

Location
The neighbourhood
Domaine des Escaunes is on the edge of Sernhac, but it’s impossible to tell from within its walled gardens as vineyard views unfurl into the distance; the turning from the narrow street is discreet. There’s a footpath directly from the hotel to the famous canal at Pont du Gard (one hour). You can hire canoes and row under the aqueduct on the Gardon river. The hillside settlement is quiet but it’s just five kilometres to St Bonnet-du-Gard and a little further to Nîmes and Avignon, for restaurants and shopping.
Local points of interest from Marc Vermeulen
- Le Pont du Gard, famous roman aqueduc ! At walking distance and also easily to reach by bikes...
- Every saturday morning, an amazing provencal market in Uzès, medieval town, 20 minutes drive from us. To enjoy flavour and colors of Provence...
- Nîmes La Romaine and its new museum "Musée de la Romanité", just in front of the well-known arena...Opening June 2nd, 2018.
- Lavender, Olive Oils, you will find a lot of shops in Uzès to bring back a souvenir of Provence,...
- On the spot, an amazing swimming-pool, large gardens....a paradise for parents and children !

Introducing
Marc Vermeulen
Marc and Patricia Vermeulen hail from Belgium but moved south 15 years ago in search of a better life in the sun. Swapping careers in IT they set about a caring and meticulous restoration of Domaine des Escaunes; Patricia’s background organising conferences for IBM means she’s well used to entertaining groups. They live onsite with their two children and three dogs.
