The Experience

Two renovated stone barns stand on a gentle slope surrounded by acres of meadows, woodlands and wild garrigues. Each comfortably sleep eight but if you are a smaller party it is also ideal and a larger party can take both together.

Caroline and Andrew live in the grounds and are fine cooks – ask about special dinners under the trees with other guests or served in your own gite. Find much style and comfort: sparkling modern kitchens, large deep sofas to retreat to in the evenings, a huge swimming pool with a terrace and honesty bar, and stupendous views stretching far over the Cévennes mountains.

Paths lead up and away in all directions for walks and picnics, and you can stroll to the bustling town of Quissac in 15 minutes. This is a grand area for walking, hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, cycling, horse riding; beaches and the Camargue are 50 minutes away.

Reviews

We had a fabulous long weekend spent in your beautiful accomodation. We loved exploring to picturesque local towns and spending time relaxing by the pool. We got to sample some of the local vineyards and thoroughly enjoyed our time. Caroline and Andrew are excellent hosts and we look forward to visiting again in the future for a longer stay.

Beautiful gîte. Very homely and extremely well equipped. Relaxed and friendly. Thank you Andrew and Caroline.

Carla, Soller

A truly beautiful property in a stunning location. Andrew and Caroline have put such thought into every small detail. We have never stayed anywhere with such amazing cooking facilities... great for social gatherings and our lovely hosts struck the perfect balance between exceptional quality and informality for a truly relaxing stay. The area has lots of great places to walk, cycle, kayak or just wander and chill but is not too busy.

Jeanette, Exeter

Only a short stay here but wish we could have stayed longer! What a tranquil setting only moments from the quaint town of Quissac. Lovely accommodation and super hosts. A real gem. Will definitely be back!

Hayley

Great stay at La Devèze, enjoyed the pool as well as the numerous activities offered. This included canoeing and hiking the nearby mountains. On our last night a big paella was cooked for us up by the swimming pool - amazing.

What a fantastic holiday at La Deveze! The villas have been lovingly restored and are decorated beautifully. Andrew and Caroline were great hosts, always available to answer questions or provide ideas for trips and activities. The Festival in Quissac was ‘un Grand Spectacle!’ With fireworks and bulls and horses running through the narrow streets and through the arches down by the river, it gave a real flavour of local life. We have now returned to reality and never has that felt so true, Andrew and Caroline have had the vision to create a little oasis of magic and we can’t wait to visit again!

La Deveze is the perfect balance between luxury and simplicity. Caroline and Andrew have created something really magical for their guests and go out of their way to help you get the most out of your stay. From early morning through to moonlit evenings, the pool area is stunning and the grounds are lovely to explore. This was a perfect holiday with lots of wonderful memories made. Thank you!

Derek, London

Oh, what a wonderful stay. It is hard to believe how much we did in a week. It is almost unfathomable how much hard work and craftsmanship Andrew and Caroline have invested in their beautiful home(s). We luxuriated in fine linen, languished in the giant pool, almost drowned in the wines of Pic Saint loop, posed for portraits, savoured French grey, marvelled at the views, soaked up the rays and chatted late into the night about Wimbledon, rugby, Whitgift, old friends, new friends, Suffolk, photography and everything else. Wonderful Gites and wonderful hosts. Thank you. Ps our son saw a Genet!

We have just had a fabulous week at La Deveze, staying in Maison du Domaine. It is spacious, stylish and the best-equipped holiday house we have ever stayed in. The pool area is lovely, the views from there are breath-taking, and being a little higher up it gets a breeze which is very welcome in the summer heat! Andrew and Caroline are great hosts, offering lots of ideas of things to do, being on-hand to answer questions, but never being intrusive. It was a luxury and a tonic to spend time there.

Sarah, York

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Maison du Tipperhopper, which is by far the most beautiful holiday home we have ever stayed in. Caroline and Andrew made us so welcome and were very helpful with suggestions of local places to visit. The pool area is stunning with fantastic views and everything you need for a truly relaxing holiday. The house was so well equipped and comfortable we didn't want to leave! Quissac is a delightful traditional French town with lots of summer events. A highlight was the family photo shoot Caroline did for us - we have special memories to keep and hope to return soon

A large group of friends took over both the Domaine and Tipperhopper houses for a long weekend to celebrate a 50th birthday. The accommodation and hospitality provided by Caroline, Andrew and their family was simply magnificent. The beautiful pool, pool house and sun deck provided a sociable and relaxing environment to enjoy throughout the day and early evening. Caroline and Andrew’s stunning renovation is very special. If you’re looking for a break that is relaxing, special and hidden away but not too far from an airport then book it now – you won’t be disappointed.

Andy, London

I was part of a large group staying at La Deveze for two nights. The space was very stylish and the pool is fabulous - very refreshing and it has fantastic views. The shared spaces in the houses, terrace and pool allowed everyone to be sociable when they wanted too but there are also enough hidden spots to grab a quiet moment on your own. We'll definitely be back. Thank you Caroline and Andrew.

Sarah, Bristol

We really enjoyed our week at Mas de la Deveze over the May bank holiday. We booked both houses and together they worked brilliantly for our families. The views are stunning and the local area has everything you could want from a French holiday. Great restaurants in Quissac and at nearby Sauve, and wonderful boulangeries and charcuteries minutes away. Nearby there are beautiful walks and all that the Gard has to offer including stunning markets, vineyards everywhere (we found a great wine tour!) and lots of medieval and roman history. It's the perfect place to unwind. We'll definitely be back!

Amelia, Brighton

I stayed with my family at La Deveze in 'Tipperhopper' for a beautiful week in the Southern Mediterranean springtime. We had a tremendous week - the house was wonderfully put together and we were looked after so well by Andrew and Caroline who were completely charming. The pool was so relaxing and also fun for the children and has amazing views of the Cevennes mountains. The position of the house is excellent with easy access to Nimes (we loved the new museum there), the Mediterranean beaches and the Cevennes (our favourite - incredible walks). Looking forward to returning soon!

Patrick, Brighton

We had a wonderful stay at Mas De La Deveze Quissac ,the cottage we stayed in was beautiful immaculately clean every thing you will need for self catering. Caroline and Andrew the owners were very welcoming. The swimming pool which is a lovery large one lovely to cool off in. The weather was lovely the areas were beautiful, we enjoyed looking around the area ,stopping off at one or two vineyards to sample the vino. Walking distance to the local town Quissac which is such a quaint place to enjoy a meal or just walk around and stop off for a coffee or a glass of vino. we will definitely be back

Karen & Philip, London

We had the most incredible holiday at La Devèze! The houses are absolutely stunning and are by far the nicest holiday homes I’ve ever stayed at. Caroline and Andrew were such amazing hosts and provided everything we needed and more whilst we were there. The house and grounds are so beautiful we’ve decided to book our wedding here for next year!

Daniela, Chipping Campden

My partner and I came to stay at La Deveze earlier this year and had the most wonderful time ever. Caroline and Andrew could not have been more welcoming; they recommended lots of places for us to go and things to do - including a wonderful walk around the grounds of the property. The friendly dog, Major, even kept us company on the walk! Caroline has such a lovely family and we were lucky enough to meet some of them during the stay. The property was exquisite and divinely decorated...coupled with the most comfy bed we'd ever slept on. We will definitely be back!

Anna, Brighton

Mas De La Deveze is without a doubt one of the most stunning places I have ever stayed. Whether it’s the luxurious bedrooms, the huge swimming pool, the beautiful walks or the breath-taking views. I really can’t wait to get back there!

Genevieve, London

We spent a super holiday in La Deveze (Tipperhopper) in December. The house is surrounded by beautiful countryside and from the house you can go for long tranquil walks with clear rivers and the smell of wild thyme. Just a short drive away there are many pretty towns and villages to explore. Rooms are well equipped and beautifully decorated and outside there's a stunning pool. Coming from Finland I appreciated the blue skies and sunny weather even in December! Caroline and Andrew are lovely, welcoming hosts and I'm already planning our next holiday there!

Kristiina, Helsinki

Pulling up outside the wrought iron gates of La Deveze always makes your heart pound - wonders await. Autumns of long walks and awe-inspiring views, hours spent treasure hunting at local brocantes. Summer days are whiled away by the hilltop pool, gazing through rosé-tinted glasses across the Cévennes mountains. In the restored ancient barns, you’ll find French antiques and the finest linens, that luminous Languedoc sun streaming in and keeping you company all year round. Cheese from Quissac market, handmade soaps and La Deveze’s own honey; a few delights we’ve unearthed - what will you find?

Location

The neighbourhood

The gites are set above the market town of Quissac, which has all you need to stock up – five boulangeries, two butchers, a supermarket and a popular Wednesday market. There are festivals in the area all year round celebrating, among others, the arts, music, poetry, flowers and the olive harvest. Nimes is 40 minutes and Montpellier 45 for large shops, museums and galleries.

Local points of interest from Caroline & Andrew Lewis

  • Lose yourself in the numerous food markets such as Quissac, Sommieres, Uzes or Lunel filled with wonderful fresh local produce all seasonal and at its best. Alternatively pick up a bargain in either of the brocante markets in Anduze or Sommieres.
  • If you are a fan of swimming the area is filled with hidden treasures of secluded rivers and lakes. More of a fan of the salted variety, the coast is a 40 kilometres drive to beaches ranging from the upmarket Grand Travers to the wild Espiguette.
  • Endless stunning walks to challenge all abilities are abundant. Either making your starting point us up into the nearby Coutach or a short drive to climb the stunning Pic st Loup. You will always be rewarded with magical castles, views and landscapes.
  • We are situated in the finest wine area the region has to offer. Wonderful wineries such Mas D'Oncle, Chateau Cazeneuve or La Gravette will tempt you with their wonderful variety of wines and their unerring passion. Why not bring a bottle back to enjoy?
  • If you are as adventurous as our six sons you will love the local rock climbing, white water kayaking, extreme canyoning and endless summer festivals where you can party well into the early hours. Then unwind with some quiet fishing on the Vidourle.
  • The region has so much to offer but the magical charm of La Deveze means that many guests choose to spend the majority of their time relaxing in the warm sunshine surrounded by idyllic views with all the creature comforts at hand. Why not have a lazy time?

Introducing

Caroline & Andrew Lewis

Caroline and Andrew combined their property development and interior design skills, and with a little help from their six sons they breathed life back into what was a ruined mas, or farmhouse, in 2014. They both worked in the restaurant industry in London and have transferred their hospitality expertise to La Deveze, where they live with their friendly dogs. They love to advise their guests on what to see and do in the area.
