La Maison du Vilain Petit Canard

Uzès, Gard

A stylish family retreat in beautiful, much-loved Uzès… find sunny or shady spots in the garden, enjoy laps in the pool

4 bedrooms

Sleeps 7

Walk through your front door to enter a home full of character and sunshine; this 1950’s house has the loveliest of gardens, reached via a courtyard half open to the sky: roses, lavender and a tinkling fountain in the heart of bustling Uzès.

Nothing inside is as it was. The restoration is immaculate, the kitchen superb and the bedrooms spacious and bright. Stock up at the market on the glorious main square, then take lunch to the creeper-clad canopy, shrouded from the neighbours by trees.

Medieval Uzès has its own Duc and Duchesse: catch up on the history in the Ducal Palace. Sit beneath pomegranate trees in the Jardin Medieval, or hop in the car in search of Roman treasures. Orange, Nimes and Arles are under an hour’s drive, as are the famous vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape.

The neighbourhood

The house is strolling distance from the stunning Place aux Herbes, whose arched arcades house coffee shops and galleries, while the market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) is a must. Uzès is excellently placed for discovering Provence. Set off for river swims, vineyards and wine tastings, and the Pont du Gard, the most famous Roman aquaduct in the world (15km). For art lovers Avignon is a delight (40km) - don't miss the townhouse galleries of Calvet and Angladon.

Local points of interest from Lyn Challands

  • Wander the ancient streets of Uzès, visit the Medieval garden, climb its tower for the view, see the Duke's palace cheek by jowel with pretty shops selling wine, flowers, linen, all good things. People watch from a cafe in the Place aux Herbes, relax.
  • Walk or cycle the beautiful countryside. Explore the lovely Valle de l'Eure, walking from the house onto the gorge below town. Follow the route of the Roman aqueduct to the Pont du Gard through woods and vineyards (you can get the bus back!).
  • Canoe down the Gordes du Gardon from Collias, only ten minute drive away, come out under the arches of the Pont du Gard. Take a picnic, swim, watch the kingfishers dart in the water, you'll be picked up at the end and taken back to your car.
  • Be a culture vulture in Nimes or Avignon, both only 45 minutes away. Both are wonderful, fascinating and very different cities with art galleries, world renowned museums, gardens. Don't miss the Palais du Papes, it's amazing.
  • Visit perched villages. Honey stone buildings clinging to rocks. Plus beaux villages - Lussan, Roche sur Ceze, Montclusm Aigueze all an easy drive away. A little further you are in the Luberon - Peter Mayle country, with Gordes, Menerbes, Bonnieux.
  • 1-2 hours will get you to widely diverse countryside from the wild hills of the Cevennes, the salt lakes and flamingos of the Camargue, the dramatic gorges of the Ardeche and the fishing villages on the coast. So much to explore.
