The Experience

Overlooking a hamlet on the borders of the Gard and the Ardèche is a hillside farmhouse, a heavenly B&B with a self-catering barn too. Welcome to hand-woven rugs on polished concrete floors, upcycled rustic doors and Italian walk-in showers. Not only is the house beautiful, it is run by Caroline and Olivier, warm, delightful hosts, passionate about art, sustainability and nature. The suite, beneath the family house, comes with its own patio, so start the day in the sun and feast on fruits, pancakes and homemade granola. Discover the Pont d’Arc, laze by the pool, hike or bike through lavender fields with Oliver – your enthusiastic guide.

La Maison Papillons oozes quality and relaxation. They have managed to create something very special, Caroline is front of house and is extremely accommodating. The smell of the morning baking combined with late night serenading by their neighbour made our three night stay the highlight of our honeymoon tour of the Ardeche. The decor is well thought out and is rustic and sophisticated at the same time. I don’t often return to places I’ve stayed but this will be an exception. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

Local points of interest from Caroline Girault de Burlet

  • This region has something for everyone! From the picturesque, listed villages, the caves holding geological and human treasures, the fabulous bustling street markets, the festivals, walks in the unspoiled countryside to swimming in the local river!
  • The Maison Papillons is situated in the hamlet of Monteil, 2 minutes drive from the village of Montclus recognised as ‘one of the most beautiful villages of France’.
  • 5 minutes from the property lies the Aven Orgnac recently classified as Grand Site de l’Aven Orgnac. It is one of the most impressive cave systems in Europe! Its museum of prehistory, interactive and educational, delights old and young alike.
  • Barjac; charming French village is the nearest commercial centre has a fantastic weekly market. At Easter and in August, Barjac is the focus of attention as it holds its international brocante (antique and second hand market).
  • Just 25 minutes drive away, you can discover the famous Caverne du Pont d’Arc, listed as a Unesco World Heritage site. The cave boasts the oldest cave paintings, 34,000BC, in the world. A replica has recently been completed by artists and scientists.
  • A little further a field, you may like to visit the fabulous medieval town of Uzès. Avignon is not only famous for its annual festival but also its beautiful historic buildings and monuments, such as “Le Pont d’Avignon” and the Bishops Palace.
