The
Experience

This medieval house, overlooking the walled City of Avignon (splash out on a terrace room with a view) is the former palace of Cardinal Orsini. Rich in decorative tiles, steep narrow stairs and 14th-century timbers, it has been in the family for three generations. Today the owners live over the road but are hugely helpful and on the spot for breakfast, served in an atmospheric, vaulted chapter house at one big table; all is delicious. Xavier is an artist who runs workshops on site; splendid suites combine modern art with country antiques and chandeliers. The grassed grounds are beautiful – there’s even a pool.

Reviews

A delightful room looking over the river to the city of Avignon. A cold wind prevented us from taking full advantage of the pool, but our welcome could not have been better and breakfasts were more than adequate to set us up for a day's sightseeing. Easy bus route across the river when needed. A word of caution - Maison Orsini has many steps and stairs. Not good if you have limited mobility.

Possibly one of my favourite places to be. Delightful owners, phenomenal views, gorgeous terrace, huge rooms, modern bathrooms, refreshing swimming pool, brilliant recommendations and a real sense of history make this a remarkable place to stay. Very French, very lovely, I need to stay for longer and will go back!

Just perfect. Lovely people, lovely place, lovely views, lovely breakfast, lovely swimming pool. We had an upstairs room, more like a suite, with our own terrace. So comfortable. Much better than being in busy Avignon and you can walk there in 20 minutes (though it is uphill on the way back!) Lots to see in Villeneuve itself too and good places to eat. Don't miss the gardens below the fortress and the Grand Chartreuse.
