The Experience

You arrive to the enchantment of authentic old stone walls and wild rushing water. 1737 is engraved over the door of the mill, the wheel and millstones lie intact, to be remounted “sometime”. Alongside the river, the big meadow begs for deckchairs and ball games and good timber furniture beckons from the barbecue terrace. The recently decorated house is generous and relaxing inside: white, soft blues and greys with an attractive mix of old and new furniture, two superb stone fireplaces (logs provided) and a good-sized kitchen/diner. You’ll find a bottle of grape juice made by the friendly owners who live nearby. In the sitting room, a big drawer holds plenty of board games, there are books and DVDs and a long inviting sofa. The double room is beyond, as are the big shower room, laundry and wc. The single bed is up on the wide mezzanine leading to the twin room; this could be the children’s floor. Swim in the millpool, fish from the weir, canoe up to Quissac, watch kingfishers… and there are masses of outings: the Cévennes, the Camargue, Roman Nîmes, lovely and lively Montpellier.

Reviews

Located in an idyllic setting with a huge garden area and picturesque river - great for swimming and kayaking, and for varied wildlife. Moulin du Meunier is spacious and airy, well equipped and very comfortable, and within easy striking distance of lots of places to visit. There are lots of options for eating and sitting outside, with nice shady areas for those very hot days. Steven went out of his way to ensure we had everything we wanted and there is lots of helpful information on markets and restaurants to visit. We’d be very happy to return!

Wonderful peaceful location and a beautiful house. The perfect place to stay & relax and enjoy nature

Gavin, Amsterdam

The Moulin is a simply enchanting place for a rural retreat - It really is as beautiful as it looks on the photographs, and it's position right on the river is superb. Our blissful week spent exploring the surrounding countryside and taking dips in the river passed far too quickly! We left refreshed, rejuvenated and happily full of (the expected) wine and cheese. A real treat!

Clare, London

We spent three nights in this beautiful mill and cannot recommend it enough. Tranquil, relaxing, well equipped and luxurious - Steven provides accommodation which has all one needs to unwind and enjoy a holiday. The location is great - not too far from shops, restaurants and quaint villages. The grounds were a great space to enjoy a glass of local rose wine in the sun, whilst preparing fresh vegetables from nearby on the BBQ. The dream! Thanks Steven for punctual and helpful communication throughout.

The moulin is a special place and our stay there was exceptional. The house is beautifully restored and well-equipped. The sound of the river complimented by the architecture and history of the building made our stay feel magical. The location is great for market day trips to Uzes or Sommieres or for visiting Anduze, Nimes or Roman monuments close by. The owners are kind, hospitable, professional and very responsive. A memorable stay, thank you!

Ashley

Having been lucky enough to stay in this beautiful location twice over the past few years with friends, I cannot recommend it enough. Days were spent kayaking down the river behind the mill, reading, walking, exploring the Saturday market in nearby Sommieres, and once we also went for dinner in Montpellier. It is very private and a fabulous place to wind down. Cannot recommend enough!

Local points of interest from Steven Maisel

  • Sommieres Saturday market is a must, looking forward to consuming oysters, cheese, fresh bread and chilled Picpoul wine from the market at local restaurants keeps us going through the winter months. There are all the sights, sounds and smells of Provence
  • Roman Nîmes with its arena, ferias, Maison Carré , Norman Foster designed library is a regular haunt especially on Thursday nights when the city welcomes all kinds of music, from Flamenco to rock in the open. Try the stalls, wine tasting and tango session
  • The Pont du Gard is another Roman masterpiece, bringing water to Nîmes. In the summer, there are fireworks & concerts to enjoy
  • Montpellier is not far away., a dynamic university city with the famous Comedie square, music festivals and museums. There are also many small shops selling wonderful jewelry, clothing and gifts
  • The beaches of the Med are close with Le Grand Travers our favourite. Spend the day on the golden sand, in the clear blue water and finish it at one of the excellent restaurants & night clubs on the beach such as La Voile bleue
  • The Camargue with its wild horses, bulls and gardiens is well worth a visit in a hoverboat. Arles and Saintes-.Maries-de-la-Mer are also close by
