The Experience

This modern, light-filled gîte in a quiet residential area is secluded yet only a ten-minute drive to bustling Uzès. There you’ll find plenty of shops, good restaurants and a fantastic market every Wednesday and Saturday.

Gré and Wim live next door and are the consummate hosts. They’ll have a bountiful hamper waiting for you – homemade quiche, salad and local cheeses or a fruit tart –  and ensure your stay is wonderfully fuss-free, with fresh pastries on your first morning, bathrobes, shower smellies, magazines and if you like, a mid-week table d’hôtes at theirs. If the dog comes too, there’s a bowl and bed just for them.

Drift off to birdsong by the pool and in hidden corners of the garden under the oaks, sip aperitifs and watch the sun set from the terrace. Borrow the bikes or wander into Saint Siffret, with its charming restaurant and bar around an old school courtyard. 1.2km down the road towards Saint Maximin you’ll find an épicerie; pop in for a coffee and pick up supplies from the deli counter. Venture further past vineyards, orchards and fields of lavender and sunflowers.

Reviews

We loved Villa Darbounelles. From the moment we arrived Gré made us feel very welcome. The gite comes fully equipped and Wim and Gré have thought of everything you could possibly need. We felt very much at home, loved the outside sun deck area and the quality of fixtures and furnishings in the gite, very modern and stylish with gorgeous travertine tiles throughout.

Villa Darbounelles is a stylish, well appointed Gite with everything you could want for a relaxing holiday - a home away from home. We were welcomed with lots of goodies & the superb hosting skills of Gré & Wim, who made our stay extra special. We enjoyed all the local area had to offer - so much to see & do in this beautiful region - lunches & shopping trips in beautiful Uzès, great walks with our dog accessible from the Gite & visits to the truly beautiful Gorges Du Gordon & Pont Du Gard. Still plenty of time spent at the pool! Can't wait to return and would highly recommend.

Location

The neighbourhood

The villa is in a quiet residential area with a mix of holiday and year-round homes. Keen walkers and cyclists will love it here, and Gré and Wim will happily share cycle routes and secret walks with you – Gré has even made sure there are pocket sized maps in your room. Saint Siffret is about 1.2km away and Saint Maximin - a small village about 3km the other side of the hill - both have popular restaurants. Uzès is a ten-minute drive and has year-round activities and events, from truffle hunting in the winter to wine and antique fairs through spring, summer and autumn.

Local points of interest from Gré & Wim

  • Walk for miles straight from the house through the natural beauty of the surrounding Garrigue. Gaze at the Mont Ventoux listening to birdsong. Spot the illusive Golden Oriole and perhaps a wild boar or deer. Be amazed by the variety of plants and herbs.
  • Loose yourself in the narrow streets of Uzès, admire the centuries old buildings. Go mad at the twice-weekly market to take home fabulous fresh local produce. Enjoy a coffee on a sunny terrace. Sample the food on offer at the many great restaurants.
  • Take a trip to the famous UNESCO site of Pont du Gard and learn how the Romans built this masterpiece. Visit the cities of Nîmes, Avignon and Arles and admire the wealth of architectural and cultural prowess. Follow in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh.
  • Tour the picturesque villages surrounding Saint Siffret. Attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year – January is all about the famous Truffle. Sample locally produced olive oil – the Paradis Mill at Saint Maximin is only minutes away.
  • Taste the wine! Everywhere you look are vineyards producing good to excellent quality wines. Within ten minutes you may find as many producers of AOP Duché d’Uzès, IGP Gard and IGP Pays d’Oc wines. Many domaines offer guided tours through their vineyards.
  • Swim or kayak in the river Gard, find a cascade for a picnic by the waterside, ride a horse through the Camargue or let yourself be driven by a horse and carriage. Most of all, relax, enjoy and depart full of precious memories and vow to return for more.

Introducing

Gré & Wim

After years of working in the hospitality and catering industry in the Netherlands, Gré and Wim moved to France over a decade ago when they bought and renovated a barn in Burgundy to run their own self-catering space. In search of more adventure, they re-settled in Provence in 2019 to set up Villa Darbounelles. They’re warm and chatty and live next door with their two Jack Russells, Monty and Elfy.
