Castle Cottage

Castelnau le Lez, Hérault
Bed & Breakfast

Your strong and exuberant hostess loves house and garden passionately. It's shuttered against the summer heat and is an oasis even in winter

3 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 – 4

On the edge of unspoilt woodland, in a garden full of trees and colour where 23 tortoises roam (no touching please)… it’s hard to believe you’re a tram ride from Montpellier. The house is recent, the vegetation lush, the tempting pool (mind the alarm) set among atmospheric stone ‘ruins’. In the house are small but comfortable beds in pretty rooms (shuttered in summer) full of family pieces and colour, a good shower room and doors to the terrace. Outside is a sweet little independent ‘studio’ for two. Your exuberant, dynamic hostess loves this place passionately, her garden is an oasis even in winter and the beach is nearby.

Magnificent setting in Montpellier's total nature. You wouldn't realise you're actually in a big city: the calm, sounds of nature, how lovely! And the pool! It was so good. In short, our stay was much too short and we have only one come back. Thank you Dominique.

A beautiful garden! A totally gracious host, and the tortoises were adorable. Magnificent. Thank you, Madame.

Many thanks Dominique for a short but wonderful stay - thank you for sharing your house with us.

Not only did we appreciate your beautiful ‘heaven’, we loved your company and life experiences. Breakfast outside on your wonderful terrace was a joy and still warm at the end of September! We loved our walks along the Lez and to the Bois de Montmaur, an incredible nature reserve. Not having a car made us walk for miles, we are now super fit! It was especially nice to talk to a lovely hostess who appreciates life and nature.

Thank you, Dominique for looking after us so well at Castle Cottage. It is a real sanctuary away from the noise of the city. We especially loved your beautiful swimming pool. Thank you for opening it up for our early morning swim. So lovely to do and then find breakfast on the table! You were so kind and helpful, giving us information and ideas about local visits. The tram into Montpellier was great. It was very good to talk to you. You are so passionate about what you do and the environment. It was great to find this lovely house and garden and we shall recommend it to our friends. À bientôt.

Thank you very much for a wonderful week in Castelnau le Lez! We went to Aigues Mortes, St Guilhem le Désert, Saintes Maries de la Mer, all beautiful places ! After shopping in Montpellier, we could swim in your pool and enjoy the garden and of course the turtles. I am grateful that you taught me how to plait Julie-Claire’s hair 😊 Lots of love to Noami too. We come back to your Cottage Castle! Many thanks for your hospitality!

Stayed in the 'pavilion' for one week. Extremely comfortable accommodation, very welcoming host in Dominique. Loved the superb swimming pool and beautiful gardens. A real haven. Will definitely return!

We received a very warm welcome from Dominique, the owner. Our room was off a lovely terrace overlooking a large and very green garden. It was great to start the day by having breakfast there on fine days. The room was comfortable and very clean and we really enjoyed our time there. The swimming pool was a great plus. Castle Cottage is just outside Montpelier but it's easy to get into town thanks to the very efficient tram system. Dominique is also very helpful in offering suggestions of where's good to visit. We'd certainly go back there if we visit the region again.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Dominique Cailleau

  • Montpellier, a buzzing university city with historic buildings, lots of cultural life and excellent museums, including the newly renovated Muséé Fabre, is a quarter of an hour away by the spanking new city tram service.
  • To the west, the little old fishing harbours of the Etang de Thau - Sète, Mèze, Marseillan - are excellent for day trips, serving fresh seafood and offering traditional jousting matches all through the summer.
  • To the east lies the walled medieval village of Aigues Mortes at the gateway of Camargue, huge swathe of marshland where pink flamingos and white horses graze alongside great black fighting bulls.
  • On the way to Aigues Mortes you can find the most beautiful beach of the area, Espiguette beach in Le Grau du Roi. Why not also visiting the Seaquarium there, a marine life centre with 200 species of Mediterranean and tropical fish.
  • Further along, Saintes Maries de la Mer, the 'capital' of the Camargue, is the site of a legend according to which Joseph of Arimathea arrived here after the crucifixion of Christ with Mary Magdalene and the Holy Grail.
  • Finally, St Guilhem le Désert (in the mountains) is one of France's most beautiful villages, with its pedestrian flowery cobbled streets, artisan shops and hiking routes. Have lunch on the square under the 150-year-old tree!
