The Experience
Up steps and along a lavender-lined path to this secluded hillside retreat. Flowering broom and sweet peas rub shoulders with evergreen oaks, linear vineyards and, in the distance, history soaked Villemagne-l’Argentière. Sun dapples onto decking, a hammock is waiting and a canvas sail protects you from summer’s soporific heat.
This traditional country home has local stone walls, tiled floors and robust beams; book and music collections live under the stairs. Stoke the open fire, lounge in the sitting room, or gather in the kitchen around stockpiles of market-bought charcuterie and St Chinian wine. The bedrooms are very private – ideal for two couples travelling together and the converted attic is great for extra guests. You’ll find all the basics in the kitchen and a bottle of wine waiting.
Hire mountain bikes, puff to the top of the hill, paddle in the river just below you or walk further for deep water and diving holes.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on a near vertical wooded hillside. The house stands on a broad ledge at the bottom of the hill right by the river. You could be miles away from civilisation but the centre of the village is only a five to ten-minute walk. Here you'll find a café for a spot of (quiet) people watching, a couple of restaurants and a fruit and veg shop. Big shops are a five-minute drive.
Local points of interest from Tom Redpath & Jim McInulty
- Fantastic new restaurant has opened - L'Hortensia in St Gervais - 15min drive up the valley. Add that to L'Auberge des Combes and Fluers de L'Orlague and you're sorted for the week!
- We now have additional space in our loft which has been converted into two singles or one double with en suite - sky light windows make for great star gazing - comes at a small supplement for more than 4 people
- Feel free to make use of our wood burning oven - pop a pizza in and use the heat overnight to cook a Coq au Vin or use it for bread making! Marvelous!

Introducing
Tom Redpath & Jim McInulty
Tom and Jim used to holiday nearby with an old friend and fell in love with the area. They bought the house just two weeks after they started looking around and they're constantly improving it. They also holiday here so it feels like a home from home.
I'd love to stay here in warm weather to explore that steep and astonishing hillside above, swim in the clear river below, and curl up on the deck like a little wild animal while my bread bakes in the genuine brick oven. Then off to bed in a clean-cut, uncluttered bedroom beside one fine country antique. The next day would be a Languedoc history binge: Villemagne is a treasure-house of memories.
