The Experience

Up a country lane through vineyards to discover two romantic retreats on either side of a pool. You’re sitting in wooded hills in a regional park so the night skies are stunning.

You’ll be greeted by colour, whatever the season – the red earth of the Salagou Lake, the smell of wild thyme in the hills – and Barbara and Richard’s warm welcome. Find a basket of goodies for breakfast, basics for cooking in the spacious kitchen (or order dinner on the terrace) and handmade soaps- they’ve thought of everything. The eco-credentials are impressive: all-natural materials, lime washed walls, recycled paper insulation and a solar-heated pool.

Stroll half an hour through the forest – stop to spot wild rabbits and boar – to Clermont L’Hérault; there’s a great Wednesday market, deli and good restaurants. Shop for delicious local wines or sit sampling in the sun at a local bar.

The most perfect, tranquil and friendly place to stay for 2 very exhausted Londoners. Barbara, Richard, the chickens and cats made us so welcome. The beds were comfy, the towels were fluffy and the picnic delicious. An utterly blissful holiday!

Sarah, London

This is the place to come to if you enjoy peace & quiet, your own little garden space, with the pool just outside the front door in what seems on entering, to be an ancient walled garden. Luxury without glitter; comfort & quality living yet simple. Good food a couple of times in the week cooked by your generous hostess. Wonderful local sites to visit, stunning landscapes, & plenty of history & ancient sites to explore. Just for couples, so why not pair up with friends & have the whole place to yourselves!

This was our first visit to Le Grand Hermitage and we thoroughly enjoyed! Barbara welcomed us with a wonderful vegetable curry and chilled white ... so kind and caring. The accommodation is excellent. We enjoyed peaceful evenings and numerous local trips to a wide range of attractive locations in this lovely area of France. We would highly recommend. Merci encore Barbara!

Andi, Llandeilo

This was our second visit to Le Grand Hermitage and we loved it even more the second time. The weather was not quite so good as the previous year, with a few cloudy and windy days at the start, but then the blue skies and sunshine reappeared with style. Le Grand Hermitage is the perfect spot for a tranquil, sophisticated retreat. Barabara and Rocky are wonderful hosts- there if they are required, and discreet if not. Barabara’s cooking is beyond restaurant quality and highly recommended. There are many places to explore in the area ,and we will be returning to continue exploring.

Anna, Rutland

We have had two wonderful holidays at Le Grand Hermitage and would highly recommend it. The villa 'La Cigale' is beautiful - very peaceful and private, with a gorgeous pool and a lovely terrace where you can have long, leisurely breakfasts, aperitifs and evening meals while listening to the sound of the cicadas. Barbara and Richard are lovely hosts, always at hand if needs be, but most respectful of their guests' privacy. Le Grand Hermitage is ideally situated to explore the surrounding area- villages, abbeys, vineyards, beaches and cities. An ideal location to fall in love with the Languedoc

Shirley, Coleraine

This is a great place to totally unwind with only the noise of cicadas to disturb your relaxation. The pool, particularly welcome in the recent heat wave, was clean and refreshing. The villa was beautifully decorated and contained everything we might possibly need - even a picnic basket with cold blocks, plastic plates and cutlery. This would be a wonderful place to stay at any time of the year as it close to many diverse towns and villages, full of high classed gastronomy as well as main attractions like Cirque de Navacelles and Grotte de Clamouse. We can't wait to go back again.

The neighbourhood

You’re in the countryside away from the crowds but only a mile from Clermont L'Hérault. It’s hill country so find plenty of activities: hang gliding, cycling, trekking and riding. Head to Lake Salagou (15 minutes) for windsurfing, swimming or boating; the coast is half an hour in the car.

Local points of interest from Barbara Simpson-Birks

  • Come for a guaranteed child-free break in deep country peace. Bring your music: there’s a piano in one house, a guitar in the other. Barbara will cook for you, Richard will chauffeur you in his classy Jaguar - sheer luxury.
  • The fascinating walled village of Villeneuvette, a listed 17th-century monument, is 10 minutes’ walk. Pézenas, a lively old town full of antique shops and fine eateries, is half an hour by car. Tours can be organised: vineyards, monuments, restaurants .
  • The walking is wonderful - one path goes right past the door. This is superb cycling country, too (there are 4 bikes to borrow here), and the Lac du Salagou is just down the road for swimming, sailing, wind-surfing and lazing in secluded coves.
  • Hoping to cook in that fine kitchen? You will find a well-tended tub of aromatic herbs growing outside your door, hens in the garden for fresh eggs and colourful street markets in the nearby villages and towns. The scenery is stunning with hidden vineyards
  • Book early to avoid disappointment: the word is out and bookings for the season start arriving straight after the previous summer season Dates can be flexible, no fixed start or end days are imposed. No wonder so many return. Book cheap flights early.
  • Lots of cheap flights arrive into Beziers, Montpellier, Carcasonne, Nimes and Perpignan. We are spoilt. Dont forget the TGV into Montpellier. Montpellier is a fabulous city to visit, if you car tear yourself away from the pool and comfy sunbeds and wine.

Barbara Simpson-Birks

Barbara and Richard both ran successful businesses back in the UK before moving here for the climate. They built the two barns and main house and they love sharing their special places with guests. You won't find their children or grandchildren roaming here but you may meet the chickens.
