The Experience

Step through a majestic carved door and into a meticulously restored 17th-century house, where high ceilings and tall windows let in plenty of light and the uncluttered interiors are a tasteful blend of old and new.

Your apartment is one of three on the first floor and has an open-plan living and dining area, a modern kitchen and a private terrace. All guests share a grand salon with a large dining table opening out onto a lush garden and an exquisite swimming pool that feels like an old Roman bath.

You’ll find a few restaurants and cafés in town and plenty of other options within a 15-minute drive. Visit the majestic Abbaye de Valmagne with its cloisters and fine chapel, and afterwards eat at the restaurant and taste fine Languedoc wine. Hike in surrounding hills or sail on the Étang de Thau – Bouzigues and Mèze are known for their oyster beds and shellfish restaurants.

We recommend without hesitation this cottage, a haven of peace in this beautiful charming building. It is equipped with every comfort, swimming pool at the right temperature, the garden a lovely setting, it allowed us to recharge our batteries. Ideally located to discover this beautiful region. Very friendly welcome from the owners who also know how to provide you with information on the region and allow you to discover good wines... a treat! Everything to hand for a very pleasant stay.

Very pleasant stay in a very comfortable charming quiet house . Warm welcome from the owners; a great place to recommend for a short break or more.

We spent a fabulous 10 days here. The spacious and well equipped accommodation with its own balcony area is a haven of peace and tranquillity. The attention to detail in the tasteful furnishings and décor oozes charm and style. Access to the pool, table tennis and communal dining area provides you with options to enjoy family time or spend an hour reading in the interior garden in the hammock. Michel and Anjna are happy to help with any questions regarding what to see and do in the area. All in all, a perfect spot for an unforgettable holiday!

Our gite within the Hotel de Rat offered absolutely everything we needed. It was a dream of a place to stay, very private and quiet. With exquisitely tasteful and relaxing surroundings, both inside and out, this thoughtfully well restored historical building offers something quite inspiring in every area. It truly was a delight to stay there and we look forward to our next visit.

One glimpse of the majestic front door & I knew this place would surpise me. It did! What a delight to see the wonderful job of restoration that the owners have done. The house is utterly theirs & yet they have respected the history & architecture of the past, bringing it all together to make a most welcoming & elegant home. It is peaceful, colourful & stylish, & I would come here most happily.

We had a brilliant stay with Michel and Anjina, who are delightful hosts. The apartment is wonderful with a large and airy sitting room and kitchen. The bedroom and en-suite bathroom are beautifully decorated with a walk in shower and to die for tiles! We wanted for nothing, the breakfast was prepared each day with fresh juice, fruits, pastries and home made cereals and we spent our time relaxing in the garden enjoying the tranquility.

The neighbourhood

Montagnac has shops to stock up in and market day on Friday. The surrounding countryside is mostly punctuated with vineyards, ancient plane trees flank the roads and pine trees offer perfumed shade. Pézenas, a ten-minute drive away, has cobbled lanes rich with history and numerous private 'hotels' from the 17th and 18th-centuries with magnificent doorways, balconies and stone staircases; there are also great restaurants, antique shops and a busy Saturday market here.

Michel & Anjina

Michel and his wife live on the second floor of the property. They bought the house over 15 years ago and have worked tirelessly on the restoration, doing most it themselves and watching the light and seasons change before making decisions. A lot of original materials were recycled and the history of the building has been kept alive and visible. They're discreet hosts but happy to share an apéritif and wine with their guests too.
