The
Experience

Here, in deepest France, clinging to a Cévennes hillside, is this ruined stone farm rebuilt by your amazing eco-hosts, Henk-Jan, architect and carpenter extraordinaire, and Marjoleine, decorator and great cook. Their commitment to nature, their hamlet and house is impressive. In a huddle of stable, piggery, and chestnut dryer, the warm woody interior embraces you: rafters, panelling and floors, ingenious shutters and ladders are all hand-made from reclaimed local timber, the shelves are sparkling slices of local stone and the beds are superb. Peace is total, harmony reigns. Walk with a donkey, return for good food.

Reviews

Thanks to Henk-Jan and Marjoleine for a fantastic time in the Cevennes summer at end August 2017! This was a great holiday and best for us included: - - the terrific hospitality: we looked forward each day to returning for evening meal with other guests: lovely food and a great way to make new friends. - all the advice for walking:- we had super walks, with maps provided, each day straight from the front door into the tremendous landscape of the Lozere. Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Marjoleine & Henk-Jan Spruijt

  • The Cévennes is an excellent region for hiking and mountain biking. Its landscape is highly varied and breathtakingly beautiful. The landscape is perfect for hiking or mountain biking.
  • Wherever one cycles, the steepness of the slopes and the hairpin bends compete for the attention demanded by the beauty of the surroundings. You will find little valleys with rushing streams and secret spots, high wide plateaus with rough boulders.
  • There is no need to use your car at all, although you will find it rewarding to explore the area further by car. There are nearby streams and water courses where you may swim, jump, dive and construct dams.
  • There a number of outdoor sports to be enjoyed, such as canoeing/kayaking, canyoning, rock climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, and hiking with a donkey, as described by Robert Louis Stevenson in his Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes.
