The Experience

A beautiful, pink marble gentleman’s house in its own parkland on the edge of a very pretty town between the sea and the mountains. Graceful bedrooms have calm colour schemes, good linen, tip-top bathrooms and elegant antiques. Some even have little balconies – throw open the windows and soak up the Languedoc’s 300 days of sunshine.

After a breakfast of pastries, breads, homemade jams, cheeses and hams (try Fuet, a Catalan cured sausage), wander through the garden with its ancient olive trees to find a spot beside the lily pond; practise your serve on the court, or just float in the pool.

It’s under a 10-minute stroll through the leafy suburbs to village life for bakeries and shops. Take the yellow train up the mountain from Villefranche for amazing views; wind your way through the Natural Park of the Catalan Pyrenees on foot for more glorious scenery.

Close to Prades' amenities, this grand stone-built property is a haven, its extensive grounds offering secluded areas with mature trees, pond, fountain... not to mention activities for all the family: pool, tennis court, trampoline and more. Evelyne and Alex are gentle and welcoming hosts. The spectacular view of the Canigou from the baronial breakfast room is an inspiring way to start each day.

A hidden gem in the beautiful Pyrénées, we spent a memorable week at Castell Rose. The children could not get enough of the swimming pool, trampoline and swings and we enjoyed the peacefulness of the extensive gardens and stunning view of the mountains. Our family room was extremely comfortable and spacious complete with a little terrace. Prades is a central location to visit many interesting medieval villages and even go horse riding in the mountains! Evelyne and Alex are natural hosts - friendly, warm and attentive... making our visit in their lovely home extra special.

We've stayed here three years in a row, in the Dali gite. It is ideal if you are travelling with energetic children - there's a great pool, tennis, trampoline and lots of other sports equipment available. The owners are lovely, very welcoming and always ready to provide local advice or help out with any problems. The gite itself is really well appointed, excellently maintained and with luxurious touchs. The view from the patio of Mount Canigou is breathtaking. Many very happy family holiday memories were made here.

Joanna, Charpont

We have used Castell Rose for two years following and it remains an exceptional place to stay. Evelyne and Alex are consummate hosts and, whether you are enjoying the excellent breakfasts and accommodation in the B&B, or staying in one of the gites, the whole place exudes style and quality. You can relax or be active (pool, tennis, trampoline and other sports) in the extensive grounds or take in many places of interest nearby. Thoroughly recommended.

For saltier sands, don’t miss the enchanting fishing village of Collioure (a 20-minute train ride from Perpignan).

Evelyne & Alex Waldvogel

Evelyne and Alex are both charming, friendly and helpful. She used to work in air travel in Valence, and Alex in Swiss banking. They moved into Castell Rose in 2003 and have been welcoming guests since, so are hugely knowledgeable about the area and local events.
