La Petite Maison

Chavanat, Creuse

A warm welcome from super helpful owners - roam glorious grounds, borrow bikes, visit medieval towns. Idyllic for couples or young families

Plenty to do in the landscaped grounds of the Château de Memanat – a swimming pool, a grotto hidden in the roots of a giant sequoia, swings, climbing frames, trampoline. Young owners Andrew and Natalie are energetic and happy to help, from doing a shop before you arrive to babysitting – they live here with their children, horses, donkey, chickens and a Labrador but peace is plentiful! Your 18th-century stone cottage has a private terrace where you can eat outside under the shady parasol; steps lead up to the pool and grounds. Inside on the ground floor there’s a cosy living room with a wood-burner (plenty of logs), and a kitchen with a pack of local produce left for you: coffee, tea, milk, fruit. Upstairs, the big sunny bedroom has a prettily dressed double, and a day bed that can be made into a twin for children. Close by is Lake Vassivière with beaches and water sports; pleasure boats go on island-hopping trips and there are cycle routes, bars, restaurants and a great modern art gallery on its own little island. You’re about 20 minutes from the tapestry capital Aubusson, a lively town with street theatre, concerts and book fair.

Chateau de Memanat is the most wonderful self catering experience we have ever had and we will definitely be back! The grounds are stunning - as soon as you drive in you are bowled over the the beauty. Andy and Natalie are super hosts, very warm and helpful, but in no way over-crowding. We loved chatting to them and getting to know them! The Petite Maison is perfect - we are a family of four and had bags of space and all slept very well. The pool, play area and grounds are idyllic. Surrounding area is also brilliant, loads of fun things to do. The animals were an added bonus! Thank you!

Received a very warm welcome from Natalie, Andy and the family including a delicious welcome pack of regional goodies. Chateau is a magical place with masses to do in the grounds and further afield. Overall an excellent stay.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Natalie Solomon

  • La Creuse is in the centre of France and has some of the cleanest air in Europe, with miles of unspoilt countryside where you can walk, cycle and go wild swimming with more chance of spotting a deer than encountering another person!
  • Nearby Aubusson, famous for it's tapestry is a beautiful historic town with the ancient weavers house showing the tapestry process as it once was to the newly opened tapestry museum with it's collection of masterpieces it's a worthwhile visit.
  • For a sure fire way of spotting some wildlife there is a Bison Safari or a Wild Wolf Park to visit, but hopefully you'll see your fair share of wildlife on the doorstep.
  • Lac Vassiviere one of France's largest artifical lakes has a variety of activities on and off the water. With plenty of sandy beaches, a modern art museum on island, free water taxi's, a meal cruise, and even an ariel extreme course it's a great day out.
  • Local produce is an abundance with several markets on each week in the summer. Our nearby neighbours produce saffron, and within our commune theres a family run goat farm and a pottery run by friendly locals.
  • Brocantes throughout the summer months are a hive interesting objects, and are a great opportunity to practice your french and haggling skills. We visit as many as we can get to, and always nab a bargain!
