Fans of wildlife and star-gazing will be in their element here, deep in the Périgord-Limousin National Park. The Fontaines, from Jersey originally, have carefully renovated the 19th-century barns – preserving original beams and stonework – around the courtyard of their 50-acre farm. They live in the farmhouse and love having guests keen to explore the miles of woodland paths and cycle tracks all around. They’re also super-helpful: will lend bikes, organise lake fishing, riding, hot-air balloon take-offs from the doorstep (well, almost), deliver fresh croissants, even do a grocery shop if you’re running late. One of the barns has a one-bedroomed apartment on each floor (the ground floor one suitable for wheelchair users); the other has two en suite bedrooms above its big open-plan living area with wood-burning stove. All are bright and spacious, with good modern furniture and mattresses, well-equipped kitchens and bathrooms. They each have outdoor sitting/eating areas, great country views and underfloor heating. Everyone shares the pool and hot tub. And it’s just ten-minutes’ drive to fabulous medieval Rochechouart.
