The Experience

Come to enjoy this gentle, charming family and the serene vibes of their old Chartrain house. Up two steep twisting spirals to the attic, through the family’s little prayer room (a shell for each pilgrim who’s stayed here), the sweet, peaceful bedroom feels like a chapel itself with its honey floorboards and small windows (no wardrobe). Lots of books: reminders of pilgrimage, just beneath the great cathedral. Madame artistic, friendly, offers artists a small studio to borrow; Monsieur speaks nine languages and is quietly amusing; both are interested in your travels. An unusual and special place, in a timeless town.

I would highly recommend this oasis in the heart of Chartres. The hosts are a delight and very welcoming, a must to stay if you are in the area

Jane and Paul, Church Stretton, Shropshire

Quirky historic house in the town centre but quiet. You can drive to the front door to drop off/collect luggage and park in the nearby Place Drouaise (paying) or Avenue d'Aligre, which is free. The house has only one room, which is the whole of the top second floor, but you can only reach it via a narrow metal spiral staircase with 34 steps. The bathroom and toilet are on the first floor, which means navigating the spiral staircase in the night. Accommodation is spacious, twin beds are comfy, breakfast is good and the hosts very welcoming and obliging and speak English. Good wi-fi downstairs.

You won't find an abundance of luxury at Maison JLN. But you will find a whole lot of quirky charm in a fascinating old building that's part artist's garret and part spiritual treat. And you'll get a warm and helpful welcome from Nathalie and Jean-Loup. At only 5 minutes stroll from the cathedral and 55 Euros for beds and breakfast, you'll struggle to find better value.

Natalie and Jean are genuinely charming and helpful. We only spent one night but it has such a lovely atmosphere I know I will return. Their medieval house is so central yet has free parking nearby. Very highly recommended.

Local points of interest from Jean-Loup & Nathalie Cuisiniez

  • From Calais, you will arrive on "Place Drouaise", 2 minutes walk from our house. From here, you can walk to the cathedral and Chartres's old town, but also go for stroll along riverbanks and have a countryside felling walking through the city !
  • From April to Octobre, you will be on "Chartres en Lumière"( Chartres on light ) tour: many monuments, including the cathedral, illuminated from nightfall. The rest of the Y-year, they are wrapped in seasonal colored lighting.
  • For gourmet people, the market is taking place on Wednesday and Saturday, where you can find fresh vegetables and locals products. It's cosy and authentical. And because good cheese, good bread and good vine are so french, don't miss the cheese maker still
  • If you like, wee tell you about out house which was bakery since 1630 until 80, our restaurations since wee bought it in
  • As wee try to reduce the electromagnetic pollution, we use low internet access but will be happy to switch on Wi-Fi if needed.
