The Experience

A turreted manor flanked by woodland, terrace, sweeping gardens and a fabulous view. Quintin and Dawn, who live in the gatehouse, are there if you need anything and offer tours of the local vineyards – by bicycle if you like.

The large, sociable kitchen is perfect for cooking fresh market finds then sitting down all together for a convivial family meal. Take a book or a glass of wine to a plump sofa in the sitting room, or a pod-like wicker chair on the terrace.

Bedrooms are up winding wooden stairs – two with little turrets for peeking out at long valley views. Find an office for workaholics, a well-stocked playroom and even a retro cinema. Roam country lanes, laze by the pool, fire up the barbecue at sunset, unbend.

Reviews

A beautiful little chateau in the heart of the Loire with breathtaking views across a sea of vines towards the charming medieval town of Chinon. Elegant rooms, plenty of lovely places to sit and entertain, beautiful grounds and the private cinema make it a superb spot for a gathering. The owners couldn't be more friendly or willing to help their guests.

Location

The neighbourhood

You’re in unspoilt UNESCO-protected countryside. Wines can be tasted at vineyards in every direction or explore Fontevraud Abbey, resting place of Richard the Lionheart and picturesque Montsoreau, with its lively flea market. A short stroll over the river takes you to Chinon's cobbled streets and restaurants. Saumur’s weekly market is a joy.

Local points of interest from Karen Horne

  • The most amazing bakers within walking distance, even does gluten free bread twice a week
  • Stroll into Chinon centre passing over the River Vienne along your route
  • Chinon is a Historic town with meandering Cobbled Streets which are full of artisan patisseries, boulongeries, and a renowned artisan bread shop
  • Local speciality market in Saumur on a Saturday morning is spectacular and one not to miss!
  • Watch the Bastille day Fireworks from the front steps of the Chateau - spectacular, the best I've seen
  • Children friendly with babydan stairgates, baby equipment, bouncy chairs and high chairs. Helping you to travel a little lighter!

Introducing

Karen Horne

Karen and Paul are friendly and energetic Londoners who work in design and architecture. Their vague dreams of living in France became reality when they discovered sleepy Chinon. They hunted around, fell in love with this place and have been pouring their energy into it ever since. C4's 'Escape to the Château DIY' show features the pair and their children showing off their impressive DIY skills.
