The Experience

Built on the edge of the grounds of the former castle of Richelieu, this historic manoir has been beautifully restored by its Dutch owners into a sociable retreat for family holidays and get-togethers. You stay in the west wing and central section – the owners live in the east wing, but the space is so generous you feel nicely private.

Eight en suite bedrooms fan out across three floors. One is tucked in the tower; all are bathed in natural light with a sprinkling of antiques, good art, pretty fabrics and striking wallpapers. Warm colours and eclectic objets carry through to the dining and living rooms, where there’s an open fire, books, board games, puzzles and a Bechstein grand piano.

The kitchen is superbly kitted out and, on warm days, you’ll gravitate to the natural swimming pool and outdoor dining area with its handmade wooden table. Wander past the kitchen garden into the vast oak forest, browse for brocantes in town, then head home for a sundowner.

Reviews

I adore this property, its pretty interiors, rambling park and gardens and the easy-going, artistic ambiance, created by the charming Dutch family who own it and live in one of the wings. It would be such fun to gather a group here for a week of exploring the most beautiful and culturally rich part of the Loire, cooking food from the markets or just relaxing together. Utterly blissful!

Location

The neighbourhood

Richelieu is a magnet for artists and the town is stuffed with galleries and antique dealers. Friday is market day when you can pick up fresh, locally grown produce. Medieval Chinon (21km) hosts a Thursday and Saturday market. Stroll through Cardinal Richelieu's magnificent park – the château was pulled down after the revolution. Your closest château is Le Rivau (10km).

Local points of interest from Jeroen and Leonoor De Man Bergen

  • Les Deux Comptoirs for antiques and second-hand books.
  • Le Fossé Saint Ange serves traditional French semi-gastronomic cuisine with a touch of the exotic from the Caribbean and Asia, as well as a Friday market. Nearby: the castles of Rivau and Oiron, the monthly flea markets in Chinon and Azay-le-Rideau.
  • Le Ti Bio d'Aire for meat and other organic products, and Domaine de la Garrelière for wines.
  • La Forteresse de Berrye for its wines and its 12th-century fortress, a listed historic monument. Faye le Troquet in Faye-la-Vineuse, for its Sunday brunch and its chic vintage clothes.
  • The vegetable garden restaurant Les Jardiniers in Ligré has a cuisine that travels straight from picking to serving. It was awarded the Michelin Green Star for its model role in eco-responsible gastronomy.
  • La Guinguette Rabelaisienne, at the foot of the town's fortress and on the banks of the Vienne, for its festive atmosphere, especially during its dances one or two evenings a week.

Introducing
