The Experience

Steve and Tim welcome foodies with a bountiful vegetable patch and cooking classes for those who ask; they live across the lavender and rose filled courtyard and are there if you want them. Steve’s a chef, so the kitchen is professionally kitted out and Tim can sort you out with a bottle from their cellar.

It’s pin-drop quiet here, surrounded by great artwork with only a medieval château to disrupt the endless views of the countryside: a real grown up escape. Take fortifying forest walks, return to the cosy, sunny barn and choose a book from a good collection.

Cyclists can bring bikes for the 800km Loire cycling route, a kilometre from the apartment; walkers can ramble through wine country. Sip sparkling brut in Saumur’s sinuous medieval backstreets, observe equestrian derring-do at the Cadre Noir, or visit the turreted château to experience its majestic presence above the river.

Reviews

Our stay at the Old Barn was exceptional in every way. Steve & Tim`s warmth and hospitality was first class, and the barn itself is furnished and equipped to the highest standards. If anything the website photos fail to do full justice to how spacious, comfortable and attractive it is. We availed ourselves of Steve`s culinary skills on two occasions and were not disappointed. Both meals were wonderful, and for the second we were able to enjoy Steve & Tim`s company on their lovely patio overlooking the countryside. We have every intention of visiting again as soon as we can. Thank you both.

Beautifully converted top floor of a barn, sitting in a traditional farm courtyard near the owners house. Windows overlook open fields, like the private garden terrace. Very quiet. Great hosts. Charming & very professional, happy to help if needed. Old Barn was the best equipped of the 6 gites we hired during this trip. High quality fittings, furnishings, linen/towels & kitchen, & spotlessly clean. Vg oven. The open plan gite was spacious & well designed, with a big modern shower & lots of hot water. Perfect for a relaxing holiday. We wish S&T well.

We've just returned from a week with Steve and Tim and feel very lucky to have found such an amazing property. Firstly Steve and Tim are the perfect hosts, always on hand to answer a question or to give advice - don't hesitate to book the cooking course! The location is astonishingly beautiful and quiet - plenty of vineyards in easy striking distance by car, good bike rides from the door. The Barn itself is exceptionally well equipped and clean - they've really thought of everything. All in all a very peaceful and relaxing stay. We will be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

In a tiny hamlet one mile from the village of Lerné, the restored farm is set on a hill with views overlooking the plains which fall away to the south. Vast farmland surrounds; Chinon (12 minutes) is the nearest town with a Thursday morning market, shops and restaurants. Walks from the door lead to quaint stone cottages, rambling manors, romantic ruins and tiny villages. Visit the Loire châteaux at Montsoreau, Villandry and Saumur, or nose about the antique shops in Candes-Saint-Martin (15 minutes).

Local points of interest from Steve & Tim

  • Lots of English history in this area, the royal castle of Chinon was where Henry II Plantagenet and Eleanor of Aquitaine ruled over half of modern-day France and England in the 12th Century. The castle is 15 minutes by car.
  • Henry, Eleanor and Richard the Lionheart were interred at the Abbey of Fontevraud, another worthwhile visit just 15 minutes by car.
  • The lovely gardens of Villandry are an easy 20-minute drive, perfect for a picnic in the summer.
  • Chenonceau, the most beautiful of the Loire Valley Chateaux is one hour away, and easily combined with a visit to Les Halles in Tours.
  • Les Halles is a covered market in the "old" part of Tours, with more than 50 vendors of incredible foods and wines of the region.
  • The local AOCs of Chinon, Saumur-Champigny, Bourgueil and St Nicolas Bourgueil offer some of the best French wines. Ask for recommendations and we can set up your visits.

Introducing

Steve & Tim

Passionate Francophile foodies Steve and Tim ran restaurants in San Francisco before upping sticks to the Loire Valley in 2008. The dynamic American duo have ingratiated themselves with the locals thanks to their passions for wine, food and renovating old houses – they’ll send you off to their favourite vineyards to meet the winemakers with a list of restaurants to try.
