The
Experience

The 16th-century château bursts into view from its wooded hilltop, tall turrets and ivy-clad façade towering over the river Anglin. You can saunter down here past the pool and picnic on organic pâté under a 400-year-old oak; just water, trees and birdsong. Inside, read by the fire, tinkle on the baby grand, retire to bed. Deeply comfortable rooms in warm reds, blues and pastels have museum-worthy antiques, plush fabrics, gilt portraits, book-lined walls. Hugely friendly, Madame offers tastings, courses and talks by local savants – and there are gîtes in the grounds. “Simply a delight,” says our inspector, “for anybody at all.”

Reviews

We have just spent an idyllic 4 nights at Saint Victor La Grand’Maison in ‘La Chambre Grise’ – a truly memorable stay in a lovely part of France that was new to us. Our spacious, well equipped rooms were furnished beautifully with antiques and plenty of books and magazines in a variety of languages. Marie was extremely welcoming and lovely company. Her meals (made with fresh local produce) were a joy. We can’t think of anything we would change… other than improving our own spoken French!
