Deep within a secret forest lies this pretty half-timbered cottage, perfectly peaceful and clothed in creeper. Sandrine and Alvaro live a stroll away and happily share their beautiful gardens and magical lake. It’s bonny inside and all neatly on one level: good-sized open sitting/dining room with a plump white sofa and pretty gingham armchairs, terracotta tiles with a sprinkling of oriental rugs, and heaps to amuse if it rains. Cosy bedrooms are dressed in handsome fabrics, tailored by Sandrine’s mother; an immaculate bathroom has a reassuringly tubby bathtub. All is spot-on in the slender modern kitchen – on some nights you can save yourself some toil and stroll to the main house for a delicious home-cooked dinner if you book in advance. Wonderful woodland walks from the door, fishing in the lakes, cycling, châteaux and vineyards galore – and the nearest shop 3km away. Back for a splash in the pool or perhaps a sequestered sundowner in your own little lawned garden while the nippers head for the outside games area shared with the B&B guests. Enjoy the open space and freedom – but do keep an eye on the very young.
