Château Saint Martin d'Oydes

Saint Martin d’Oydes, Ariège

A glorious big house for family and friends in fine French countryside providing deep comfort, a salt water heated pool and masses to explore

6 bedrooms

Sleeps 17

Mullions and towers and heavy oak doors softened by glorious pink-gold brick and a thoroughly welcoming face: château it certainly is, forbidding definitely not. The interior does not disappoint in its big rooms with brick and stone walls, impressive open fires, hand painted frescos, genuine arrow slits and antique tiled floors. A wonderfully eclectic mix of elegant chairs, squidgy sofas and antique pieces makes the atmosphere warm and homely, never precious or formal. There are bedrooms galore, as many bathrooms, play spaces for children and a triple-aspect library full of (English) books, as well as a TV in the salon if you want to gather in front of a film. The tranquil park holds a generous swimming pool and room for all to relax and play. One of the loveliest parts of France, the Ariège rises to the glorious peaks of the High Pyrenees over rolling farmland, mountain-bright rivers and unspoilt villages. With famously unpolluted air and ideal weather all year round, it’s a walkers’ heaven, has white-water excitements and masses to explore in bastide towns, Neolithic painted caves and art-filled cities such as Toulouse and Carcassonne.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Gillian Keene

  • The chateau is right by the quiet and charming little village of St Martin d'Oydes, a bastide where the houses form a complete circle round the church. There's also a hard tennis court in the village for our guests' use and a trampoline in the park.
  • There is wonderful walking all around - our favourite short walk (4km) starts in the village and climbs to the tops of the surrounding hills, giving magnificent views of the High Pyrenees. You can also find several walking guides in our library.
  • The high level tree walks at Sequoia Vertigo (15 mins) are a must; there are zip wires and rope walks for young children as well - a great day out for all the family.
  • If you want to venture further afield our top choice is the Neolithic cave painting at Niaux; extensive and staggeringly beautiful, they really are magnificent. Or visit the amazing Cathar citadels, including the spectacular Montsegur.
  • Check out the almost daily local markets - we try not to miss the small Friday market in Saverdun, where our friend Jo sells his Pyrenean cheeses. Nearby are an excellent butcher, patisserie and a delightful restaurant.
  • It is worth checking out village fetes and other events; great fun with excellent food on offer.
