The
Experience

Lounge on the elevated sundeck with a glass of vin de l’Ariège and you’ll think you’ve landed in heaven. You have! Surrounding you is a garden a-tumble with cherry trees and apple trees. Seats and benches are dotted around, there’s a tree-slung hammock to nod off in, and all you hear are the birds… oh, and the occasional bray from Maiya and Fudge, the resident donkeys. Ann and Ian – Ann a scuba diving whizz – are welcoming, helpful, and live on site in their own separate house. Yours, the gite, has three levels. On the newly tiled ground floor are a hall, kitchen-diner, sitting room, and French windows opening to the terrace and the views. Above are four bedrooms and bathrooms, one of which holds a sauna under the roof. The style is comfortably rustic and the bedrooms are particularly pleasing, with their sturdy new iron bedsteads and wide old wooden doors. Bathrooms are light, airy and pristine. You can ski in Ax les Thermes, and drive to the ‘grottes’ of Niaux and Mas d’Azil. The birdwatching is spectacular. Please note: with the nearest wifi in Foix (8km) this is an area for nature lovers, not technophiles!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Ann O’Leary

  • Escape from deadlines and city life to relax in a tranquil space. Sitting back on the terrace, the views stretch to the high Pyrenees at the borders with Spain and Andorra. Gite le Pastourel is at the edge of a tiny village in a valley that time forgot.
  • Sit on the terrace and watch nature come to you. For bird watchers expect raptors from buzzard and Egyptian vulture to red kite. The garden and surrounding farmland is rich with song birds and woodpeckers and at night listen to the scops owls calling.
  • With clean air and diverse habitats, there are plenty of wildflowers and butterflies to discover during the hundreds of walks to be had from the house and further afield whether wandering through woods or scaling the hills and mountains.
  • For the more energetic, there are many activities available in the area from mountain biking to horse riding, mountaineering, kayaking and cycling along the old voie verte rail routes. Or in the winter, skiing or snowshoeing only 45 minutes away.
  • The area is rich with historical, geological and archaeological features from castles to neolithic paintings. Discover the history of the Cathars persecuted for their religious beliefs or the story of industrialisation in the region at le Forges de Pyrène
  • And for the lovers of le gastronomie, discover local artisanal treats at our local markets, taste the local wines or treat your tastebuds dining out.
