The Experience

In the rolling green hills of the Aveyron, the Pitkins’ renovation of their barn is impressively innovative: original beams and exposed stone walls remain intact while light floods in through modern Velux windows, the staircase is constructed of wood and glass, and there are cut stone floors throughout. You’ll love the roomy communal living space with its arched beams, plenty of seating, a music system, UK TV and internet. The kitchen design is clever too – a happy mix of old and new with much upcycled from the old barn and plenty of kit for a foodie group. Big, clean-lined downstairs bedrooms are light and airy with great views; bathrooms are large and swish. Outside living centres on the terrace off the dining area with another long view and seductive swimming pool beyond. There are bikes to pedal off on, good local walks, plenty of Viaur river swimming spots, fine hilltop villages, like Cordes and Najac, to explore and advice on hand for anything else you may want to do – owners Richard and Anna are in the farmhouse next door.

Reviews

Wow! Gites des Milans blew us away. The photos don't do it justice, particularly how well finished and appointed the house is inside. The views from the terrace were utterly mesmerising, be it early morning, midday or watching the beautiful sunsets across the hills. We were 2 families with 4 teenagers who had 'the best holiday ever'. Wild swimming, canoeing with rapids, treetop climbing courses and an inflatable course in the local river kept us all entertained. Having the hosts onsite was brilliant and they were endlessly helpful and full of local advice. Loved it!

Marie-Louise, Stroud

Our two families of adults and older teens had a fantastic two weeks here. Richard and Anna were super hosts, always on hand but never intrusive. The barn has been converted beautifully with masses of space, all the home comforts we needed, gorgeous views and a lovely pool. We enjoyed lazy days swimming and playing pétanque, but also explored the stunning area: Albi, Najac, Cordes and St Antonin are all delightful (great kayaking at the latter). We also walked and hiked from the barn to explore the river. It’s a wonderful place in a gorgeous area with excellent hosts-visit if you can!

Helen, Suffolk

We had a fabulous week at Gite de Milan. The house was exceptional - spacious, clean and beautifully appointed. Richard and Anna were wonderful hosts, accessible and helpful yet discreet. It was very hot while we were there, and although the property does not have air conditioning, Richard have us good tips on how to keep the house cool. The house has so many parts to enjoy with a place for every moment. The views and sunsets were stunning. The inflatables on the river at Laguepie, the pretty village of Nejac, and the activity centre near by are all highly recommended.

What a wonderful place to stay. Stunning home-from-home. The peaceful and beautiful setting really made us all switch off (apart from the overly competitive games in the pool and table tennis!). Richard and Anna were perfect hosts. Discreet, yet on hand when needed.Their superb local knowledge and passion for the area made our stay even more memorable. We had a mixed age range with the children (5-16 years old), but the activities in and around the Gite as well as the hosts recommendations for the families were spot on. Would love to return to drink wine and watch the stunning sunsets. Perfect

Grandparents, children and grandchildren had a fantastic week at Gite de Milans. Thanks, Richard and Anna, we all loved our stay. Marvellous living accommodation, great pool and fascinating towns, villages and countryside to visit.

Gite des Milans was perfect for our long awaited holiday with 3 generations and a 70th. The accommodation is outstanding - it's very tastefully decorated and extremely spacious. We enjoyed fabulous the dining terrace with dramatic sunsets and watched roe deer and foxes hunting in the meadows below the house. The little (and adult) children loved the pool! Richard and Anna were the most friendly and accommodating owners with endless suggestions, I very much enjoyed the Via Ferrata. The nearby river is beautiful & great for swimming and we enjoyed exploring the many local hill towns. Thank you!

This place is heavenly! We stayed for two weeks with our two small children and various visiting friends. Richard and Anna were so accommodating - when our flight was delayed they made sure we had provisions on arrival and there also seemed to be an endless supply of toys and books for the children. The gite is really well equipped and beautifully arranged. There is a lovely swimming pool and garden with lots of interesting plants. The views are completely stunning - it would be hard not to relax here!

Harriet, Kent

we stayed with our baby for one week. What a place! Clean, comfy and the best view ever from the terrace. The livingroom is huge with lots of athmosphere. The bedroom are big and very nice. Good and clean bathrooms. Also with a view. Sitting on the terrace and see the sun set with a glas of local wine... couldnt be better. Even the swimmingpool has a magnificent view. Richard and Anna are one of the best hosts you can imagine. We got lots of Figs from them and were always very helpfull. I am a cyclist. And the region is perfect for good cycling! Really impressive hills! For us: 10 out of 10!

After many years of renting houses in France, we think we've found the perfect holiday rental. Though the pictures on the website are great, they simply don't do justice to this beautiful place. Wide views across the countryside with perfect sunsets; a sunny private terrace that even works when it rains; large comfortable bedrooms and well-designed bathrooms; a fabulous open-plan, spacious kitchen/diner/sitting-room and to top it all, a lovely pool perfect for cooling off. The owners, Richard and Anna, could not have been more helpful and kind. We were very sad to leave this special place.

We had a wonderful two weeks at Gîte des Milans in July - joined by grandparents in our second week. It’s a truly beautiful house on a ridge above rolling hills, with glorious views from the bedrooms, kitchen and terrace, and such a sense of tranquillity and greenness all around. Brilliant river swimming spots very nearby as well as food markets and castles to explore. Our children (aged 3 & 5) adored the swimming pool, bunk beds, the wonderful spaces to play outside (with a swing, climbing frame and sandpit too). A really special place to stay for the whole family.

Catherine, London

Had the most amazing and relaxing time at Gite des Milans. The accommodation is outstanding. It's so tastefully decorated and very spacious. Everything you need is provided. We started everyday with hopping on the provided bikes to cycle to the nearby village to buy croissant and baguette. The nearby river is beautiful and great for swimming in or sitting by watching the wildlife. Richard was very kind and sorted out where we could canoe. There's plenty to do and see in the area, while also being quiet and peaceful The hosts are very helpful if you need anything but not intrusive.

Kath, Cambridge uk

Gite des Milans is an exceptional property which has been very tastefully renovated to a very high standard. The property is spacious, extremely well equipped, and is ideally situated to take full advantage of the peace and quiet of its rural location, but close enough to nearby villages and towns. The area is full of places to see, and there's plenty of choice for dining out. Richard and Anna are the perfect hosts, always on hand to provide help and advice when (or if) needed. We would not hesitate to recommend Gite des Milans, and hope to return at some point in the future.

Dave, Hartlepool

We spent a wonderful week at the Gite des Milans. The conversion is beautiful and in a very peaceful setting. There are a wealth of activities for all types of holidays. During the day, we relaxed by the lavender-lined pool, went walking, kayaking and rock climbing (the latter with our hosts). Highlights from our evenings were enjoying the terrace, the night market at Najac and a charming local creperie with live jazz. The house is packed full of board games and an excellent collection of books, as well as a guitar and even a didgeridoo! Richard and Anna were very generous and helpful hosts.

Miriam, London

We stayed at the Gîte des Milans for a few well earned rest days during a long distance cycle ride across France. After varying quality of chambre d'hôtes and hotels on our route, the Gîte offered us welcome luxury and comfort. The showers are cavernous, and the thick walls and huge beds provided welcome peace and respite from cycling companion’s snoring. It's also the amazing location - beautiful views and sensational sunsets with plenty of space to unwind. Nice swimming pool too. Overall it definitely felt more like a holiday than just a few rest days. Thanks Richard and Anna

Tony, Farnham

It's hard to describe just how wonderful Gîte des Milans is. Richard and Anna have created a very special place, peaceful and uplifting. The restoration was done with generosity and integrity, creating somewhere which makes you feel good to be alive. Just being there is a joy and the area around it is full of treasures - great hikes around the Viaur gorge, the fortress at Najac, the square at Villefranche de Rouergue and the Soulanges museum at Rodez. A week was not enough!

Huw, Bristol, UK

This place is superb. The conversion is so sympathetic to the original building and its features and it makes you feel good simply to be there. The furniture and accessories have all been chosen with flair and careful thought for the holidaymaker. The amenities are all excellent and the surrounding area peaceful and verdant. I would recommend it to anyone for a holiday and would certainly go back myself.

Local points of interest from Richard Pitkin

  • For the wine enthusiast, the house is well situated. Only 30 mins from Gaillac region and just over an hour to Cahors(the "original" Malbec). Vineyard tours and degustations abound, with recommendations available.
  • The birdwatcher, whether serious birder or interested enthusiast will have plenty to enjoy. Either from the terrace, looking down on the soaring swallows and birds of prey, or from the migration viewing station 5 mins away. Kites, Hoopoe, Oriole and more.
  • Only 5 minutes away, guests looking for a challenge can try out the Via Ferrata. A cabled climbing route in the Viaur valley, which finishes with a spectacular zip wire high up above the river. Or take a trip to Najac and kayak+picnic on the Aveyron river
  • Extensive walking right from the house. Walk down into the beautiful valley of the Viaur river on well marked footpaths, and maybe take a swim when you get there. Look out for Kingfishers, Dippers and Herons.
  • Only a few minutes drive, there are 2 restaurants popular with locals and visitors alike. La Chataigneraie sits next to the river, and serves generous crepes to the background of live jazz. Le Relais is open all year, and is a good value quality restaurant
  • With loads of local markets to choose from on most days of the week, why not try the night market in Najac? Bring your own cutlery, and choose your dinner from the stalls of local producers. Sit at long tables in a convivial atmosphere with live music.
