You won’t meet a soul on the drive to get here, except possibly a wild deer. This intimate hotel, made up of a sprinkling of 18th-century buildings on several lush levels, hides among the oak woods and gazes down on the river with beautiful views of the valley. Come for a smiling welcome and an atmosphere of relaxed comfort: Joséphine and Oz left stressful lives in Britain to realise their dream of owning a small hotel and bringing up a family in France. The layout is charming, with reception, restaurant and guest rooms scattered among terraces and secret corners. The pool area has a great view, as do most of the rooms; there’s space and blissful tranquillity. In the bedrooms where rustic stone walls rub shoulders with white plaster you’ll find stylish modern French furniture and soothing colours, big walk-in showers, good reading lamps and fat pillows. The suite has a fitted wardrobe with antique doors, a comfy raffia sofa and a stunning view through a huge window. Every room is pristine. Treat yourself to Oz’s beautiful cooking on the terrace or in a dining room bright with yellow leather chairs.

Wonderful place to stay. Glorious views and lovely quiet surroundings. Good rooms with space. Oz's cooking is to die for. Thoughtful and innovative. He ever managed a superb meal during a storm and associated power cut. Nothing is too much trouble. Always helpful about places to go and visit and the best places to eat. The area is quieter than the Dordogne but just as much to see and experience.

  • All of these villages are a must; Belcastel, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Conques and Najac, all recognised as some of the most beautiful villages of France.
