Fun rustic-chic gîtes in château grounds a hop from Toulouse. Laze in the hammock, slip into the pool, peel off stress layer by layer...

Read guest comments

Discover this buried in the Haute-Garonne's green fields, 40 minutes from Toulouse on the scenic route to Carcassonne. The beautifully renovated stone château – which dates from 1462 – comes with three spacious gîtes, a barbecue, a terrace, an elegant swimming pool ringed by parasols, a shady hammock and total tranquillity (bar the odd roaming hen). The renovation is Will and Karen's work. He restored the chunky ceiling beams, smooth wood staircases, huge windows through which daylight floods. She, in the fashion industry, chose deep sofas, antique tables, wardrobes, zingy stripes and colours. Think country classic touched with glam: giant shower heads, gorgeous padded beds, super-shiny retro red kitchens. You're far from noise and bustle, but can amble over the meadows to the village restaurant or stock up at a nearby farmers' market; order a breakfast hamper of croissants and eggs. Peel off stress, layer by layer. Lake Saint-Ferréol (which feeds the Canal du Midi) offers sailing, canoeing, fishing; ski resorts are within reach; and you can roam free, by bike if you like, through endless fields and lanes.

Local points of interest from

  • Lake St. Ferreol is 15 minutes away. Constructed in the seventeenth century and covering 154 acres, this is the oldest artificial lake in Europe and was built to feed the Canal du Midi. Great place to take the children to enjoy many water activities..
  • Canal du Midi is less than 10 minutes away, were you can walk for hours and enjoy the beautiful French pace of life.
  • Revel is 15 minutes away and holds one of the top ten markets in France.
  • The sleepy, picture-book medieval town of Carcassonne is 40 minutes away and one of France's most popular attractions with it's famous castle.
  • Sorèze is 20 minutes away. This old village is classified as a historical site for its medieval streets lined by 17th and 18th century half-timbered and corbelled houses.
  • Toulouse is 35 minutes away; it is known as the 'pink city' because of the hue of its buildings. It has an abundance of original religious buildings worthy of a visit.

Guest feedback
"The Mutley gite exceeded our expectations! It has plenty of space, character and wonderful touches to make it super unique while having a modern feel to it. It is well equipped with everything you might need for a self catering situation and is a really nice private spot - you don't come across anyone else if you don't want to. You are situated in a lovely rural part of France so for us, being able to bring food from the local market back to cook and have a bottle of wine was brilliant. Will couldn't of been a better host, even getting us supplies for the next day when we arrived late!"
