The Experience
This country house dates from 1838 and originally produced wine for the French army. Although it’s in the centre of a village, it’s surrounded by large grounds and fields so feels very private and quiet.
John and Christiane leave plenty of basics and provide a generous welcome pack with fruit, vegetables, local saucisson, pâté and wine; help yourself to produce from the vegetable garden and orchard and walk down the lane to get free untreated milk from the farmer. Cook feasts in the exceptionally well-equipped kitchen or keep it simple with the barbecue or pizza oven.
There’s masses of space both outside and inside – it’s easy to find a private corner for reading, or just contemplation. A music room has an array of instruments including a mini-piano and guitar, and the games room has ping pong and table football. Head to Marciac for shops and restaurants, or wine tasting in Madiran; return to an afternoon swim in the pool.

We had the great chance to stay twice in that splendid house with its lovable hosts, John and Christiane. According to us, there’s nothing negative to say about that house. Everything is perfect !!!! It would take too much time to write all the advantages of that place. The only thing to know is that you need a car as the nearest shops are about 15 minutes away by car from the house. This the price to pay for such a quiet place 😀.

Location
The neighbourhood
Monfaucon is a very pretty village and a well-known potter, Claude Laniesse, lives nearby - visit his studio if its open. You'll need to drive a short way to Marciac for shops and restaurants. For fine dining, La Rive Droite in Villecomtal-sur-Arros, is a 15-minute drive and well-regarded. Madiran, a 20-minute drive away, has a number of small wine houses which you can visit for tastings.
Introducing
Christiane Jourdain
John and Christiane live in a separate wing of the house and have their own private entrance, but are on hand if you need anything. John is a retired sheep farmer from Orkney, now studying marine ecology and his charming French wife Christiane works during the week in London.
I'd love to stay here! Sleep in atmospheric bedrooms with soft white bed linen, cook in the charming well-equipped kitchen, and just chill sitting in one of the many covered dining areas and terraces, after barbecuing or concocting a pizza in the covered barbecue area. My children would just love the pool area, pool toys & spacious grounds.
