The Experience

In a delicious and peaceful setting just outside the hamlet of Tréjouls, this small gîte makes an ideal retreat for a couple (with cot available on request). With its back to the hillside in the Nortons’ seven-acre grounds, it has an easy country style. Thick stone walls keep you cool and rooms are pleasantly furnished in quaint, old-fashioned mode, with splashes of colour from cushion and original paintings. Up outdoor steps, Petite Grange is a stables conversion, its doors opening onto the lawn: a comfortable, one-storey house with an L-shaped living room/kitchen. Lavender and morning glory edge the patio. The other, open-sided, end of the stables barn provides shade for hot-weather meals near the pretty shared pool. An NGO to reduce environmental damage and improve life for the poorest is based here: John and Claire are a thoughtful and delightful couple.

Reviews

This delightful gite has drawn us back every year for seven years, and we now find it hard to imagine a summer holiday that does not include a visit to La Petite Grange and its hosts, Claire and John. The little house sits in delightful and peaceful countryside, with stunning views. The region is one of the prettiest we have found in France, and the nearby towns and villages are a delight to explore. The owners take great care to ensure that a stay is as relaxing as possible, and the garden, pool and surrounding walks make this the nicest gite we have had the pleasure of visiting.

La petite grange is a wonderful place to unwind. A small but perfectly formed gite with loads of natural light and high quality furnishings. There are lovely views from the terrace and garden and nothing will disturb your peace apart from birdsong. The owners offer a warm welcome and a fund of local expertise for sightseeing etc.

A lovely white stone cottage for two in a beautiful setting. Gorgeous views. Private and quiet. Well equipped and appointed. Very comfy. Large bedroom with plenty of storage space and a great bed. Private patio with table and chairs. Pool. Wonderful, knowledgeable, discreet bilingual hosts.

Claire and John as well as being welcoming and happy to advise or give information, allowed us to have complete privacy. La Petite Grange was a delightful converted barn, well furnished, clean and very comfortable. The surrounding area was rural and interesting, but pleased to have our car to investigate farther afield. There was a basic barbecue outside to use, and this was put to good use and then eat in the warm evenings in the garden. Thoroughly recommend for a peaceful holiday in a lovely and friendly environment.

Local points of interest from Claire & John Norton

  • Try the challenging 9-hole golf course 5 minutes' drive away, and then enjoy its delightful club house facilities and restaurant.
  • Enjoy lively street markets in the medieval streets of our "bastide towns" (10-15 minute drive to Lauzerte, Montcuq and Castelnau-Montratier). Evening "Marchés gourmands" provide dishes to eat on the spot, often with live music
  • Our exceptionally quiet location is perfect for walking, cycling, riding, and the village tennis court is just 5 minutes walk up the hill through our woods.
  • On the ever popular pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella, Moissac abbey has outstanding examples of Romanesque sculpture.
  • A drive along the Lot and Cele rivers takes you to several prehistoric caves: you can still visit the wall paintings of Pech Merle where there is also an excellent prehistory museum.
  • Cahors red and rosé wines complement the local specialties: duck and goose, “cabécous” cheeses, walnuts, truffles, melons, grapes, saffron … and more!
