The Experience

Tiny Valentou is a hamlet just south of the border of the Tarn-et-Garonne set in an open, prosperous and delightful landscape. Behind high hedges and mature trees is L’Ancien Presbytere, a big, four-square, southern French house with several low buildings attached, creating a series of gently shaded garden spaces. Low oak woodland screens the neighbour’s track and a swimming pool gives way to lawns and lavender. All is peaceful, secluded and serene. Up stone steps is the first floor, all beautiful old polished terracotta tiles, original windows and original doors – and the sitting room, a light, airy, colour-washed room, stylish and unfussy in a totally relaxed way, with a wood-burner for winter, logs on the house, and a study to the side, which opens to the entrance hall. Bathrooms are perfect and bedrooms are charming; one is above, with characterful beams under the roof. Downstairs: a study with a sofabed and a fabulous big kitchen-dining room opening to a furnished terrace. The nearest town is Montaigu, the nearest market, Roquecor, the nearest shop a 20-minute walk across the fields!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Catherine Walker

  • Roquecor is the prettiest Bastide village in around these parts with a lively & welcoming cafe at its heart. The bustling Sunday morning market is delightful; great for really fresh, local produce. This 'gem' is just minutes from Valentou.
  • Everyday, somewhere nearby, there is at least one market in full swing. Family centred night markets flourish in the summer months. You'll find good company, traditional food, drink &live music at these soirees.
  • Chateau de l'Hoste is a charming study in Quercy stone. This elegant boutique hotel is a few minutes from Valentou. It boasts a very fine restaurant and chic wine bar and is our favourite for a smart luncheon or dinner.
  • Our young guests love the the 'beach resort' on the lake at nearby Montaigue-de-Quercy, as do their parents. The natural swimming lake and outdoor activity centre at Parc en Ciel is well worth a visit too.
  • Enjoy country walks from Valentou; there's no need to jump into the car, just set out from the front door. Or take a bike out, there are lovely routes on very quiet roads which take you to delightful destinations. It's a lovely way to explore the area.
  • There's plenty to amuse at Valentou. After a day around the pool, playing outdoor games or resting in the shade of the garden, a perfect day melds into a perfect evening over a leisurely dinner under a sparkling, starry night sky.
