Domaine d'en Naudet

On a hilltop in the Tarn, a large and lovely gîte with room for 25 to stay comfortably – good for big family gatherings

15 beds

10 bedrooms

Sleeps 20

You can see for miles up here. 360-degree views overlook the rolling countryside of ‘Little Tuscany’, a grassy patchwork quilt of fields best seen from the bedroom of the gîte’s watchtower. Ten wood-floored bedrooms and two shiny kitchens have terracotta floors, chunky beams and ancient stone fireplaces.

In summer there are trees to give shade and a pool to cool off in; on chilly days light the fires and cook market-sourced meals from nearby Lavaur. There’s so much space you can escape with ease, but this is a place for joining in.

Drive into the countryside for sleepy villages and shuttered farmhouses daubed in traditional duck egg blue. In a little over an hour you can reach the episcopal red-brick city of Albi, the fortified ramparts of Carcassonne or the shaded waterways of the Canal du Midi.

The neighbourhood

High on its own hill, the gîte’s only neighbours are owners Jean and Eliane. Several pretty villages surround the house but for proper supplies you’ll need to drive into Lavaur (11 kilometres), which has shops, restaurants and a lively Saturday market. Hike or cycle along the old Roman roads walkable from the front door, saddle up at one of the local equestrian centres and sip enigmatic wines in Gaillac’s forgotten vineyards.

Local points of interest from Éliane & Jean Barcellini

  • Stunning panoramic views.
  • Perfectly placed for a day trip to Albi, with its fascinating brick fortress of a cathedral, its Day of Judgement mural and its Toulouse-Lautrec museum.
  • Three UNESCO world heritage sites nearby: Episcopal City of Albi, Canal du Midi and Carcassonne
  • A stone's throw from a roman way - walking and cycling galore!
  • Visit the baby lambs at the farm across the road.
  • Dine out for breakfast in summer, on the sun-trap of a terrace.

Éliane & Jean Barcellini

Jean and Éliane Barcellini have run the gîte since 2003 and live here. Éliane will welcome you on arrival – she’s the driving force behind the gîte and its respectful renovation. After 15 years working for the Haute Garonne regional council, she’s well versed in the best bits of southern France.
