If you share Laurence’s passion for cool, contemporary style – and good food – this is definitely a ‘must visit’ address. You’ve three individually styled apartments to choose from in her 18th-century townhouse in Caen’s cobbled centre. There’s an elegantly hip ground floor salon – honesty bar, open fire, Danish chairs, music playing – then, up the ancient spiral stone stair, the first floor’s classic Haussman, its tall windows, white walls, panelling and ornate moulding offset by modern pieces. The second floor has stripped floorboards, monochrome soft furnishings and funky designer collectables. Up under the eaves the feel is more intimate and cosy with animal skin rugs, black parquet floor and a roof top terrace. Excellent beds are well dressed; snazzy bathrooms and state-of-the-art kitchens cleverly fitted. And you can have fab breakfasts and homemade meals delivered to your table. The ferry port’s close and Caen’s a great little city to explore on foot so forget the car; the Cathedral, galleries and museums, good restaurants, boutiques and Friday’s bustling market are all nearby. Ideal for a short break.
