The Experience

Stupendous views are just the start, deep in the rolling countryside of Normandy’s lush, green bocage. Madeleine has created a special space with cottage style and charming furnishings, a lovely garden overlooking the surrounding pasture. The low-lying cottage is built in the classic half-timbered style, inside just as inviting as out with a fireplace and logs, TVs for rainy days and big squashy sofas. It’s a great all-rounder: country lovers, artists, writers and families will all love the setting.

Bedrooms are traditional – good bed linen and comforting duvets – while outside roses and irises crowd the garden. Tucked away is a gated swimming pool and a little bricked terrace for apéro hour. Breakfast on pastries, sourdough bread, fresh, local orange juice, homemade jam and Normandy butter.

You’re near the Route de Cidre (40km of roads you can bike or drive), the Jardin de Cambremer with its stunning blooms, and the Château de Crevecoeur where there are historic re-enactments.

Such gorgeous views - I cannot repeat that enough! The house is close to surrounding varied attractions including the cross-channel ferry, coastal resorts and delicious regional ciders. The surrounding garden is lovely and Madeleine is a charming owner.

The neighbourhood

The sinuous valleys of Normandy’s Pays d’Auge twist south among curvaceous hills and dense copses. Manor houses much like the grand, timbered Norman farmhouse across the way litter the region, which straddles cider and cream country – apples are everywhere. You’re rooted in the heart of it all in deepest countryside, around three kilometres from the village of Cambremer where you’ll find a handful of restaurants and a few shops; it’s a 20-minute drive to bigger towns.

Madeleine Declercq

Your hostess, Madeleine – charming, energetic – lives in the farmhouse nearby with her two dogs. After a career in fashion and PR, Madeleine switched her focus to showing visitors the best of her beloved Pays d’Auge, with a spell of cattle farming in between. Born in the Congo to Flemish-Belgian parents, she lived in New York, Paris and Nice before finally settling in Normandy, where she had a second home for many years. Today she rents much of her 48-acre estate to local farmers.
