The Experience

You climb the same 11th-century stone staircase that travellers to the trade fair founded by William the Conqueror climbed – and the weathered, ancient terracotta tiling is authentic too.

Bedrooms in a converted side building just opposite your hosts, are light and spacious with pristine shower rooms; their understated style sits well alongside age-old features. Shop at the market then have a barbecue in the butterfly and bee-rich garden. Within the old walls, presided over by a huge maple tree, are lawned areas, flowers, shrubs and a vegetable and fruit garden – the source of home-made jams…

Brigitte also bakes for her continental breakfasts and lays out fresh pastries and bread with organic apple juice, and maybe poached pears, on a friendly table in the breakfast/sitting room.

What a super place... The room was delightful and full of character, accessed via a wonderful old staircase, and the bed was very comfortable with excellent bed linens... Breakfast was served in the lovely breakfast room with home made cherry cake and jams available. The hosts, Brigitte and Gilles could not have been more helpful. Our only regret was the briefness of our stay... Would highly recommend (in fact, I have told my friends already).

Lisa, Marnhull

Brigitte and Gilles were the perfect hosts. They communicated with us easily in advance, welcomed us and our small daughters warmly, gave us local tips and made the most magnificent breakfast. An extremely comfortable and charming place to stay.

Emma, London

This place is very special with its immaculate, stylish bedrooms, beautiful, delightful garden and very charming, sociable hosts.

The neighbourhood

This ancient house is in a quiet residential area ten to fifteen minutes’ walk from the medieval centre of Falaise, William the Conqueror’s 12th-century castle (with its August Festival and lantern-lit night tours)and Fresnave castle, Romanesque churches, museums and galleries. Of the many restaurants La Fine Fourchette, O Saisons and Le Vauclin are recommended. So too is taking time to linger in the Lescat’s delightful walled garden.

Brigitte & Gilles Lescat

Brigitte and Gilles Lescat are extremely pleasant hosts, lecturers in economics and management, and inspired gardeners; they’ve created this one from scratch and it’s a triumph. They are keen too on history, the arts and travel – and talking to their guests from all over the world. Brigitte grew up locally, Gilles comes from near Bourges and between them they have stacks of local knowledge to share with visitors.
