The Experience

As you watch the sun set over the Seine estuary, revel in the comfort and serenity of this charming 18th-century manor house, in the green embrace of a wooded hillside. There are bedrooms on all three floors; some peep from beneath the gables of the stone-tiled roof, others gaze boldly from the half-timbered façade and you can choose between sea and garden views. Each room is individually decorated with simplicity and taste, unmistakably French, with snowy bed linen and oriental rugs on warm-hued floors; bathrooms are a riot of thoroughly modern marble. In the terracotta-tiled breakfast room, a buffet table loaded with organic local produce is a welcome start to the day, but your evenings belong to the spectacular dining room. Beneath ancient wooden beams, in the flickering light of the gothic limestone fireplace, crisp linen and white china frame gourmet meals of Gallic splendour. English owner Bridget is thoughtful, warm and friendly, and leaves a welcome note and fresh fruit and flowers in your room. The name? You’re a mile from the picturesque port of Honfleur, cradle of Impressionism. Le Manoir des Impressionnistes is part of our Normandy cider and calvados tours – why not take a peek?

Local points of interest from Bridget Boelen

  • Honfleur Ports don’t come any prettier than Honfleur on the Seine’s estuary. Glorious historic houses jostle for position on the quays, as do galleries and restaurants.
  • Deauville : An internationally renowned resort, Deauville oozes style. Glamorous events abound, from prestigious horse races and polo to the annual Deauville American Film Festival. Golf and thalassotherapy sea-water pamperings are easily to hand.
  • The D-Day landings and the battle of Normandy : There are many sites, museums and memorials relating to 6th June 1944 and to the Battle of Normandy that followed, in Normandy.
  • Normandy : place of Impressionism. The Impressionist movement is named after Claude Monet's Impression, sunrise painted in 1872 in Le Havre. Giverny, where Monet lived for many years, a village on the banks of the Seine has become a very popular place.
  • Etretat : Nature has carved fabulous shapes out of the white cliffs at Etretat. The extraordinary site drew Impressionist painters aplenty. Another startling attraction is the cliff-top golf course.
  • The Mont-Saint-Michel : A magical island topped by a gravity-defying medieval monastery, the Mont-Saint-Michel counts among France’s most stunning sights. This holy mount is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is its breathtaking bay.
