Le Moulin de Fervaches

Tessy Bocage, Manche

Waterside tranquility, big open plan communal spaces and beautiful views make a peaceful retreat for friends and family

2 places

Sleeping from 4 – 6

As you wind down the lane and look out over the Vire valley you’ll know you are in a serene spot. Right on the riverbank, your two old stone houses are ideal for a close group of friends or family, with plenty of space to relax. Delightful owners David and Katie have owned the property for over 25 years and know the area inside out, and a local lady is on hand should you need anything. La Maison is traditionally furnished, with rugs from the east, while Le Moulin’s style is more contemporary. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood their open plan living spaces with light, and airy bedrooms have firm mattresses and spotless shower rooms (some en suite). For real luxury, go for the huge double in La Maison with its canopied bed and plush fabrics. With the river so close keen canoeists and fishing enthusiasts will be happy, and everyone will have fun in the two rowing boats. Walk or cycle along the towpath, try out the velo rail or take a trip to Mont St Michel and the D Day beaches. Return to rustle up dinner in one of the practical kitchens, eat around La Maison’s huge dining table and then flop down by a roaring fire.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from David & Katie Harris

  • For walkers and cyclists, Le Moulin provides direct access to the wonderful Chemin de Halage, which runs from Mont St Michel to the Channel coast. It takes you through glorious scenery with historic towns and villages accessible as you travel.
  • The Vire is a lovely river and provides great fun for all the family, including fishing, boating, swimming or just splashing about in the mill streams. There is a boat for each house.
  • At Le Moulin, you are in a secluded natural setting. Sitting quietly by the river one can observe red squirrels, kingfishers or badgers going about their business. Above all, there is a wonderful sense of peace and tranquility which soothes the spirit
  • The area is rich in history. The world famous Mont St Michel, the glorious Cathedrals at Bayeux and Coutances and several great abbeys are all within easy driving distance. At Bayeux, of course, you can see the Norman propaganda in the Bayeux Tapestry.
  • As momentous, but more recent, the beaches of the Normandy landings are very accessible. There are many excellent museums but the Memorial at Caen is not to be missed. There are many splendid beaches on the west coast. We recommend Carteret particularly
  • Quite apart from your own fine dining by the river, there is a good range of favourite restaurants in easy driving distance. There are several excellent markets nearby to discover the exceptional local produce, Normandy cheeses and butters are renowned.
