The Experience

Leave the summer throng behind you, wind through the creamy, cobbled backstreets of Saint Martin and discover your peaceful fisherman’s cottage. Step from the street straight into the beamy sitting room snug with comfy sofas and the owner’s collection of ceramics. It may be teensy but everything is here: walls for privacy, tumbling plants…dine on the terrace, sprawl on the rug-sized lawn, gaze on the buttresses of the medieval abbey that rise majestically above.

If you don’t feel like cooking, stroll down into fashionable Saint Martin, pick a harbourside restaurant and watch the bobbing boats. Ré is ideal for family holidays: its lovely white sand beaches are a short walk or bike ride away. You hire bikes nearby and all the beach or sporting equipment you might need.

The food market is open every day so you can shop for the freshest ingredients and fire up the barbecue in your garden if you don’t want to budge in the evenings.

Excellent location-extremely quiet, yet a short walk from the market, cafes, shops and the harbour. The enclosed, private and sunny garden is full of flowers and is a relaxing and restorative space after a day of cycling and swimming. The cottage is comfortable, and the owners helpful

Jennifer, Nr Ludlow

This is a lovely little cottage with everything you could need for a relaxing break. It’s located close (5 minute walk) to the hustle and bustle of the harbour with its restaurants and cafes, yet still in a quiet area so you can enjoy a peaceful day/evening if you prefer. The garden is gorgeous, and perfect for a bit of sunbathing. It also has a great area for having lunch or dinner outside, and a bbq which we used often to cook fresh fish bought from the market that same day. Beaches and other attractions can be reached by foot or bike. Perfect getaway, highly recommend!

Muna, London

This cottage is the perfect place for a small family, couples, or small friend group holiday. The location is perfect for romantic evening strolls, “gently” active day trips (cycling to some amazing beaches is easy- even for those not confident on a bike), shellfish and pebble collecting for little kids in rock pools, and excellent, simple gastronomic pleasures in the oyster shacks along the cycle routes. It’s a five minute walk into St Martin, where you will find everything you need, including some chic souvenirs to impress friends back home. A real hidden gem. Great value.

Poppy, London

Absolutely lovely cottage, try and make it out here annually! The cottage has a well equipped kitchen for eating at home, and if you fancy a meal out, it is a short walk to the harbour for a great selection of restaurants. The garden is a suntrap, which is fantastic for cooler days to relax on the sunchairs. If you would like a quiet, relaxing and peaceful stay but still want to be in the heart of things, this is the perfect place to pick!

Sukaina, London

This sweet little cottage set in the heart of St Martin is a perfect base for exploring the Île de Ré on bikes and for enjoying the town with its very picturesque port, bars, restaurants, shops and market on foot. It's suitable for a small family, couple of any age, or 4 friends. The accommodation is simple but the place in itself is special because of its wonderful location and little garden for those who want to be able to joy a bit of outdoor space whilst being in the heart of the town.

Philippa, Sawday's Inspector

Very comfortable cottage, incredibly quiet place - we only heard the doves and swallows - really convenient for harbour, a great food market open every day from 8 am, bike rental and ice cream shop. Very nice sunny garden. Only amenities missing were wifi (but you are on holiday!) and a teapot. The owners say they will buy a teapot and the mobile phone works in the bedroom and the garden.

Anna, Edinburgh

Fisherman's cottage is a delightful base from which to explore St Martin and the beautiful island of Ile de Re. It is homely, well equipped and in an ideal setting only 5 minutes walk from the harbour, restaurants and shops. The sweet secluded garden is an absolute gem.

The neighbourhood

You're in the residential heart of St Martin with its attractive stone buildings, narrow cobbled streets and lush little gardens. Just a five minute walk will take you to the port, much culture in art galleries and many festivals, excellent seafood restaurants and the fabulous food market. It's grand biking and walking country and you're just half an hour from La Rochelle.

Local points of interest from Graham D’Albert & Elspeth Charlton

  • Feeling too lazy to cook? Wander down to the market, buy some rosé and a homemade dish to take away. The market and superette are about 3 minutes away, open evenings and mornings. Or try one of the little restos that perch on the port (like Bistrot Marin!)
  • Hire a bike, trike or tandem and head for the beach. Auberge Paysanne de la Mer (the freshest oysters and crevettes) is a tempting lunch stop right on the sea track to La Couarde. Or head nearer to home to ‘la Cible’: a little restaurant right on the beach
  • Ré is big on music. Nearly all summer there are concerts: ‘Musique en Ré’, ‘Jazz au Phare’, late August Jazz round the port and restos. Artists love the island for it’s special light: there are galleries everywhere, as well as painting & ceramic courses
  • Ré is a festival island, little île de ré potatoes, the grape harvest, fête de coquillage, obviously July 14 th with fireworks and a big party...everyone’s welcome, just wander along and enjoy the fun!
  • If history’s your thing, explore the Vauban sea defence system (star shaped and very impressive) and the city gates. The island is ‘intra muros’ and you can see how difficult it was for invaders to penetrate. Climb up the church tower for fantastic views!

Francophiles Graham and Elspeth moved out to France over 25 years ago, and now live in a farmhouse two hours away from St Martin. You therefore shan't be greeted by them on arrival, but they hope you enjoy everything that their places in both St Martin and London have to offer.
